Hello, just a quick one. I was just wondering if the big vw badge on the boot just peels off or if it has a center fitting behind it in wich case would need slight bodywork attention.

Hi Tomo,
Sorry to hijack your thread slightly, but I was wondering along the same lines:

1. If removing the silver VW badge on the boot does leave marks, does anybody sell a black VW badge to put in the old one's place?

2. Is it posible to remove the "Golf" and "TDI" badges from the boot? I've heard that it's possible to use dental floss to remove them from their glued backing, but is the area underneath painted but damaged / un-painted?

Hope people out there can help us answer both of our questions!

I can't answer the first question as I've never done it but it IS possible to remove the Golf & GTI badges.  We've done it for customers a few times.  You need something like "Shift" or a tar & glue remover to get the adhesive off.... use it gently and you should have no problems  ;D

All of the other golfs VW badges have been inserted into the body work.  There are black badges availible not to sure where you can get them from though.  What you can do is what I did.  Remove the badge from the car and its rubber insert and spray it black yourself,  you will need plastic primer and "Satin Black" spray paint.  You can pick both up from halfords for a few quid.  Then just follow the instructions.

As reguards to the gti badge.  You will need:-

hair dryer
screw driver
cloth
methalated sprits

heat the badge with the hair dryer this will soffen the glue which the badges are held on with.  Cover the screw driver with the cloth.  Slowly leaver the badge off making sure that the metal of the screw driver doesnt touch the paint work.  Then use the meths to clean away the glue that is left there.

I have just bought a Mk4 1.8T and the GTI badge on the rear bootlid is completely silver. I thought that the turbo GTIs had a red "I" on the bootlid badge?

Have VW changed their badging, and if so, does anyone know where I can get a GTI badge with a red i? Or has my dealer supplied the wrong badge on the car?

I have a 2003 TDI 150bhp and the badge on the boot just says GTI all in silver where as my last 150 had a TDI badge which was all red, maybe VW are trying to keep people guessing when they see a car on the road.

Apparently all VWs shipped into this country come with the standard silver GTI letters on the hatchback.

The UK dealers then change the silver I to a Red I to differentiate the 1.8T from the lesser GTI (the 2.0).

Ask your dealer for a TDi or GTI badge with a red I letter and swap the I's over. cost approx. ?7 , time 5mins
