Last night one of those shouldn't-be-on-the-road Range Rover's went into the back of me at a junction (her foot slipped off the pedal, apparently). My precious mk2 1991 1.8 GL Auto is now pretty much a write off - she hit me quite hard. The whole boot is caved in, lights smashed and rear body seriously crumpled. I know this is a bit of a cheeky thing to ask on here but has anyone got a rough idea how much it's worth? Her husband has offered me £400 instead of claiming on his insurance. Prior to accident, it was spotless inside and out 90k on the clock. Now looking for a Mk3 tdi as my new car!
Any ideas would be really appreciated.

go through the insurance and claim personal injury. its the reason everyones insurance goes up every year.
-
Dont claim personal injury unless you are genuinely hurt and unable to work and wont get paid.
People who claim just because they can make money out of it are scum, pure and simple
I can't see you getting much more than £400 off the insurance company but I dont really know how much a car like that would be worth - although surely denting the stupid bints no claims would be a good thing?
-
insurance - i ican get £535 for an immaculate 1.3 ryder on a J, surely a 1.8 GL is worth more

how true kittie. no expert but i reckon you take the 400 notes and run
-
well if your happy with £400 for a car which was worth alot more to you than that then take the cash. if your not happy claim. everyones insurance goes up every year because of personal injuries and if you dont take the oppertunity when its there to claim yourself you are only mugging yourself off. your paying for it either way with your premium increase each year so why not claim?
i think scum is quite a harsh word because this reality is unfortunatly very correct whether you like it or not. the scum in this situation is the insurance companies who are making millions each year and stitching every single one of their customers up with premium increases.

im with jammac on this one. everyone does it so u may aswell claim if you feel you are getting short changed
id go through their insurance or else get them to up their offer
-
ask them for £550 then go from there
-
Why does he not want you to claim? Is his wife actually insured? I'd suspect that the excess may be more than the £400 hence the offer.....

See if you can find some similar cars either on the autotrader or in the classifieds of any forums. At least then you'll have an idea of what it would ACTUALLY cost you if you wanted to replace it like for like, factor in any travelling expenses, inconvenience compensation etc then you'll come to the figure you want. If they are offering any less than this then say you'll proceed with the insurance, hopefully this will prompt them into offering what you want. If not put in the claim but expect to go through it all again when it comes to the insurance company offering you a pittance for your pride and joy.
Check out these results:

Seems they are ranging from about £500-700 for similar age and mileage, print those off and shove under their noses.

90k on an auto 795 all day long didnt it have powersteering, ask for £600 and then sell the car as is on ebay as its rear end damage the parts that are worth the most are fine should sell on ebay for about £150 etc
however if you push it and they decide to go through insurance even though its a non fault claim you will still be effected come renewal
dont claim personal injury unless you are injured its just not right
gap trade book values the car at £200 which is more than likely what the insurance company will offer

The last 2 posts are v good imo

For my two pence worth, I'd ask for about £600 or whatever you think it's worth. I reckon he'll not want to go through the insurance as it'd cost him more than £600 in the first year I suspect, let alone over the five years or whatever you've got to declare accidents for.
Might be worth dropping a thread into the insurance section, see what Martin suggests?

Thankyou to everyone for all your advices
Last night he wouldn't accept my original idea of £700 (I am factoring in the inconvenience here, that I now need to find another car and possibly hire one until that happens). We then talked about going through the insurance, which he still didn't seem keen on. Then I began to explain to him that I don't really care how much he thinks my car is worth - he thought £400 "top book" - its the fact that I now do not have a vehicle. After some long sighs he agreed to £550 and I feel that in all fairness, the insurance company are never going to pay out that much, so I accepted his offer.
I will try shifting the old vehicle on ebay, I don't really want to scrap it as they'll only give me about £30 and what a waste...I'd rather it went to someone who needs it.
Still really hurts to think of all the time and effort gone into repairs etc and how some rich cow can come and take all that away from you...ah well that's life.

so..............hows ya neck feeling now?

The whole 'everyone does it so its ok for me to do it to' attitude totally stinks! grrrrr!
What's happened to people having some moral backbone!
Oh and I forgot to say, sorry about your car, I really feel for you, it's awful when you see something you've put loads of time and money into ruined by the actions of some other careless/malicious bastard
Think you've done the right thing though
-
Do you know, my neck really hurts today. BUT I totally agree with you kittie, my morals don't agree with the whole compensation route UNLESS you actually are really seriously injured. I am fine, maybe in some pain - but I'm not dead right?
-
Sounds like you did OK. Your point about "loss of use of moter vehicle" is legally valid & does attract compensation. I sued a repair company that damged my polo's gearbox and got a new fitted gearbox + £600 and that was 10 years ago!
On personal injury argument, my 2p worth says do what is morally correct. Aside from the effect on everyones premium, I run a small business and the emerging litigation culture is really hurting me.
I made a personal injury claim after a r/bout shunt. I felt very unsure but after 2 - 3 months the insurance company sent me to a Dr. The Doctor could find the muscle group affected and I felt a lot better about it all.

go through the insurance and claim personal injury. its the reason everyones insurance goes up every year.
Really fecks me off when peeps do that
So that's why people shouldn't claim when they aren't seriously injured!! Because it makes mine and everyone else's insurance stupidly high!
Sorry to hear about the motor though dude.
