Title: My new Edition 30
Post by: p3eps on 18 June 2007, 22:44
14 weeks after ordering, its finally here!  I'm afraid the pics aren't great as they were taken with my phone.
Spec: Steel Grey, 3 door manual, Highline Computer, Front Center Armrest, Xenons, Rear Tints.  I currently have the poor RCD300 - but have an Alpine iDA-X001 and Alpine KCE-300BT on order to fit.  I'm half way through my Micro Roadpilot install... but the car is at the dealer for the next few days getting a scratch (that was there when I got it!!) fixed, and a problem with the passangers door not unlocking fixed! (great for a brand new car!)
Despite my downers, I'm trying to stay positive (currently driving a 1.2 Polo courtesy car!) because driving the Ed30 is amazing!  Hopefully she'll be back on Wed or Thu and I can take her out for a good few hundred mile run at the weekend and get acquainted properly

On arrival, she was treated to a quick hosing then cleaned with Meguiars NXT Generation Car Wash and a microfibre mitt.  A good rub dry with a Meguiars Water Magnet towel, before applying Meguiars Stage 2 Deep Crystal Polish.  After this, I applied 2 coats of Harley Pure Carnauba wax until she was shining!  Now she's sitting at the dealers with a poster on the front seat saying 'Please Do Not Wash This Car'!!!  I dont want those monkeys wiping off my wax and swirling my paint!

Anyway - heres a couple of pics!  This is the first time I've posted pics, so I hope it works!

You did indeed!  I was going to ask the same thing!
I'd just left my girlfriends up at Rubislaw and decided I'd take a wee detour home to Dyce via Balmedie!
It turned out to be a bad move, as one hundred million beasties were attracted to my Xenons and splated everywhere

Nice wheels! I nearly went for that colour too.

I've yet to spot another ED30 in my area (Kent) - which is nice in one way but I'd be cool to pull up along side another too

Thanks for the nice comments!

These are just the factory rear quarter tints.  I'll try and get a straight on pic when I get the car back so you can see the difference.

Sigh...  this whole car thing is really getting me down!

It was supposed to be returned on Wed / Thu with the door problem fixed and the scratch filled and resprayed.

I called today to ask when it was likely to be back.  They said the door parts had just arrived (3pm) and they would fit them today - and that they'd ordered a new grill instead of re-spraying.  Hopefully I'll get it back tomorrow?

The scratch on my bumper is on the black shiney bit between the number plate and the red strip... is this part of the grill?

I got a call yesterday saying my stereo / bt adapter would be shipping today - so hopefully I'll get them tomorrow too - and can maybe have a stab at fitting them at the weekend!  Or perhaps I might just drive the car instead since I havent had a proper shot yet

the black section is removable, so it'll be easy enough to fit quickly

So I should probably be glad they're replacing it rather than just fixing it?!
Fingers crossed shes back tomorrow!

My neighbour just rang the bell and handed me my stereo / bt kit!  It must've been delivered today whilst I was at work.  That'll be a wee project for the weekend if I get a chance

need feedback when you done your stereo :D

I will post some pics and let you know how it goes once its done.  I will be doing the stereo and the BT adapter both at the same time, so it may take a while!  I need to figure out where I'm going to put the iPod so that I can run the cable to there... and I also need to run a cable for the BT's microphone somewhere on the roof!  I might be tempted to get an iPod Dock and wire that in.

I checked the wiring from the stereo against the wiring from my CanBus and it all seems to match up.  I just need to join the orange wire from the CanBus connector to the Alpine one as they have it loose (dimmer).  I've had the dash apart already fitting my Micro Roadpilot GPS antenna - so I'm not scared of doing that anymore!

Away to Gran Canaria next weekend - so hopefully I'll manage before then.  If not, it'll just have to wait!

In my previous GTi, I had an Alpine headunit with iPod adapter. Drilled a small hole in the side of the glovebox, fed the lead through into the glovebox to the iPod. The iPod itself was in a slip case with a couple of small velcro patches on the back. Two matching patches on the "floor" of the glovebox kept everything secure, and prevented the iPod from sliding around.

I was thinking about maybe going for the cubby under the light switch?  We use Peli cases at work alot - which come with 'pick and pluck' foam that you can make any size you want!  I could fill it with foam and cut out the shape of the iPod in it... then it wouldnt move anywhere!
I have 2 30gb ipods here.  I used to be an Apple technician - so I made a couple of good ones out of various broken bits!  I will just keep one dedicated for the car

For me, the glovebox option kept the iPod out of sight and out of mind. Where are you going to mount your iPhone when you get it

The cubby under the light switch is out of sight too!  It will fold out when I want to take the iPod away.
I'd be scared putting it in the glove box as its pretty big, and my other junk may find its way on top of it!
I need to make sure that I can get at the USB cable - as you use it for playing stuff of memory sticks as well as connecting to the iPod cable.

iPhone... I'm happying with my Nokia N95 at the moment - be we'll wait and see!

I have a hole already in the glovebox above and to the right of where you are supposed to put your manual. Big hole can't miss it. I fed IPOD cable through that. u even get a little VW logo on you ipod.

Finally... The Alpine iDA-X001 and KCE-300BT are fitted (for now!)

They arrived on Thursday night... I opened them and got a little scared by the amount of wires!
The car came back on Friday lunchtime from the dealer.  I got a call saying it had been fixed - but they'd damaged my inside door panel trying to get the door open.  The part has been ordered - but is on back order so may take a week or 2.  Its beside the lock - so you only see it if the door is open.

Anyway... with the remainder of my lunch break on Friday I finished wiring in my Micro Roadpilot.  I went for a run round the mountains on Saturday afternoon and put a few hundred miles on the clock.  When I returned, I sat in the car and took out the courtesy light, followed by the drivers sun shade... and then ran my handsfree Mic from there down into the cubby under the light switch.
On Sunday I took out the ashtray, gear lever cover and most of the center armrest and ran my iPod USB cable into the under the ashtray.
On Monday I was feeling brave - so I dissasembled the whole dash as described in the tutorials and removed the standard stereo and the aircon controls.
I then fitted the new stereo using the Blaupunkt CanBus adapter and the genuine VW fascia adapter.  I used some double sided tape and stuck my 300BT in behind the aircon controls, and then using plenty of tie wraps fitted all the wiring so that it didnt rattle.

Everything seemed to be working well until it started getting dark.  I put my lights on, but the stereo did not dim like its supposed to with the CanBus... and the stereo is extremely bright!!  After several phone calls to Alpine and Blaupunkt it turns out I dont really need the CanBus!  Funnily enough I ended up speaking to a guy from Blaupunkt living in Amsterdam whos originally from 20mins up the road from me!  He owns a MK2 Golf and was advising me on how to fit the stereo without the CanBus!  It will require a bit of fiddling with the wiring as per some tutorials kicking about - but the CanBus seems to tick and make funny noises - so I'd rather do away with it!
Looks like I need to connect my Orange wire on my Alpine (illumination) to the back of the light in the cig lighter.  That way it will get a 12V signal when the lights come on - and that should dim my stereo display.  I will need to tap into the back of the light switch to get the switched and permanent live - but this seems easy enough.  I'll live with the brightness for the moment as I'm away on holiday on Saturday... plus I need to order an aerial adapter before I do it.

I'm not really looking forward to starting again - but it will be less wires and adapters to tie up this time!  I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the iPod cable in my armrest!  I'd quite like to put a dock in - but I'll sort that out another day.

Heres a rather blurry pic of the install:

And heres a pic for SteveS to let him see the difference between my front non tinted and rear tinted windows:

I'll get it changed over when I come back my hols and see whether I need the CanBus or not.
I'd better order the aerial thingy just now before I forget!!  It might come in time for me to try reinstalling before I go?!

Very please with the interface and functionality of the stereo.  The bluetooth is cool because it lets you stream songs directly from your phone, and control them using the stereo... but the handsfree doesnt seem to be properly compatible with my Nokia N95 as I cant transfer my phonebook
Perhaps its something they'll update eventually

I think I need to hack my roadpilot apart and change the LED's in it to blue!  The green doesnt go too well!

Hopefully when I get the Alpine's dimmer working properly it wont be so bright and will match the temp controls a bit better!

I've specifically asked for the Alpine to be wired so that the panel illumination dims when the lights are on. Am I right in thinking that the Alpine offers a blue or red lighting option? I got my previous Alpine set up to match almost exactly the GTi dash lighting - hope I can do the same again with the X001.

I specifically bought the CanBus for this reason - but it doesnt seem to work.  My last Alpine (9855R) had the facility to choose the illumination colour from about 5000 so you could match it up.  This one is only red or blue.  The red looks awful though!  Blue looks fine during the day - but without the dimmer its really bright at night!

Just get them to tap a wire from your light in the ashtray to the orange wire of the Alpine... it will give it +12V's - which is what it needs to dim.  I'm going to sort mine out later when I get back from my hols

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the sound quality, particularly from the iPod. Like you, I had the 9855R in my previous 10-speaker GTi. The improvement in audio quality through the stock speakers was impressive compared to the standard headunit, so I didn't upgrade the speakers at all. Now we're down to 8 speakers I'm wondering how much of an improvement, if any, you've noticed.

To be honest, I havent spent hardly any time in the car since I installed it... and when I have its mainly been the radio!
From what I've heard so far though, it seems pretty good.  I was under the impression it was going to be dreadful after reading a few of Hurdy's posts... but it seems decent enough.  I havent tried turning it up loud yet though - maybe thats the bad bit?!
Title: Re: My new Edition 30
Post by: p3eps on 28 June 2007, 20:51
Just spent the last 3 hours re-installing my head unit!

I took the dash apart again and removed everything.  I then bared a bit of wire on the thin wire that connects to the cig lighter (12V switched after testing it with a multimeter) and wrapped my orange Alpine wire round it.  I then plugged in the standard Autoleads wiring harness and found a switched live in the fuse box with the multimeter.  I connected my switched cable from the Autoleads harness into the fuse hole, turned on the ignition and hey presto!  Turned the lights on... and the stereo dims  :smug:

I then realised that the farka aerial adapter I had bought had the wrong connection for my stereo, so had to travel to Halfords with my dash in pieces!  I made sure I didnt disconnect the airbag light though.  When I returned I ran the cables properly and soldered the orange illumination lead in place.  I put a spade connector on the stereo switched one and put it into its fuse hole.

I then re-assembled the dash carefully... and tested it all again!

The stereo works exactly the same as with the Canbus, apart from the wiring is a little more complicated!  Once thing I did notice on my trip to Halfords... and have noticed since I installed the Canbus which seems a bit weird:  normally when you drive down hill or something with your foot off the accelerator, the MPG in the MFD displays a couple of dashes, but with the Canbus installed, it goes up and up to ridiculous numbers!  When going to Halfords I didnt have the Canbus adapter fitted - and it just went back to dashes!

Anyway - I now have a spare Canbus if anyones interested?!  It cost me £76.50 including delivery... and has only been used for 2 days!  I'll let it go for £55 including delivery.

Now I'm away out for a drive to play with the stereo... and once it gets dark I can see if one of the 3 dimmer settings matches the aircon display!

Don't forget to test the speakers out fully.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to sound quality, I guess it comes from years of violin playing in my formative years :nerd:

Had the X001 installed today and very impressed so far. The good news is the display dimmer works, bad news is that the buttons on the MFSW aren't fully integrated. Volume up/down and mute work, but cycling through the driving data on the MFD also causes the iPod tracks or FM stations to cycle too. The dealer is going to wait until the Alpine adapter is released in July and swap it over - should fix the problem. IPod integration is great and very easy to operate - shame the jog/dial wheel doesn't fully match the operation of the equivalent on the iPod itself, but using the "Enter" button isn't a problem. Blue display looks good too. I've played around briefly with audio settings, but so far I prefer everything set flat with EQ and MX turned off. My music is ripped at 256kbps, and sounds great. One gripe though - why do Alpine supply the owner's manual on a CD rather than a printed copy. It's a real pain sitting in the car with my laptop balanced on the passenger seat trying to read a .pdf in bright sunshine :embarassed:

Looks great...

For me, Grey is the only colour I would have wanted and the red highlining on the front grille really sets it off nicely.
Of the last 5 cars I've had 3 have been a sort of dolphin grey colour... ( my wife calls it predictable ) until I remind her of her 66% hit ratio of BLACK on her cars!

ALL the ED.30's are head turning...

I have the same colour on my Ed.30..   For me, Grey was the only colour I wanted.
Now I know what it will look like when I polish it up properly.
