Title: Optional Extras- declare?
Post by: cняis on 18 June 2007, 22:38
So do i need to declare my "optional" rainbow interior/16v rear lights on my insurance policy, despite being genuine VAG parts?

Im with Adrian Flux and have everything declared (exhaust system, alloys, lowered, badgeless grill).

I was just wondering how "anal" insurers can be if i need to claim?

if they were on the car when it was built then no, if they have been added later then yes. To be on the safe side, if in doubt always declare everything, often it does not cost much if anything more. I dont know how flux would do it but with us they would not make any difference

hope that helps

So Martin... if these optional extras were specified by the original owner (i.e. from the factory), you'd technically not need to declare them?

saying that, how would i know whether the optional extras on my 16 yr old Golf were fitted before it left the production line?

  Just to add
Hi, just spoke to my sister, she had a bump a few months ago, rear end shunt whilst she was waiting to pull out, other party admitted liability so car went for repair at certified garage and loan car arrived, after a week no work had been done, after two weeks still no work been done, garage stated insurance not given go ahead yet, so loan car was taken away due to the two week period, so sis is without car for another 4 weeks, gets a call from insurers stating that wheels on car are not on the policy, you know the type those budget packages from your local motor factor, she tells insurance they been on a number on years so then they say she gotta pay extra for these wheels on the premium back dated to wheel purchase date before any work can be done on car! So, the wheels cost 350, the premium they wanted was 380 and the cost of the work was 1100. They held the car for ransom til the bill was paid. They would'nt even let the car be released due to not being insured correctly! as it was only a rear bumper repair  The company was direct line!!
So if you want hassle free claims - do it their way!!!
How can this be correct

Because the wheels are an after market modification, which you have to declare as the car is no longer standard, which your sister obviously didn't do. Simple really!

you should declare everything, regardless of what type of insurance.  If you drive up someone's arse you're usually liable, and if you haven't declared everything then your insurance can quite happily turn around and say your policy is void.  net result?  you get points and a fine for driving uninsured.

When there's companies around like HIC who don't charge a penny more for all the extra crap on my car (in the sig), I don't see why people wouldn't declare mods.  It's a no-brainer.

Hmm this has got me thinking, what happens when I take my alloys off and fit steels, they normally charge extra for alloys so should I expect a refund

More likely they'd refuse to pay out in the event of a claim because you've declared a mod that isn't there
