Title: Passenger door leaks
Post by: Blazing Storm on 17 June 2007, 14:53
Hi,

Since I've had my 5dr MK2 Golf GTi the passenger door has always leaked. Water runs down through the door and as it exits through the door drains a bit of water manages to get through the door seal and run into the foot well. I've changed the window seal and reapplied the door membrane making sure it's totally water tight, but I'm still getting water coming in. I know it's definitely coming though the door and not the bulkhead as I have removed the carpet and seen water coming in.

Does anyone know what else can be done to stop this leak; it's really bugging me.

Thanks in advance.

check the roof guttering is sealing against he top of the door, it must be fairly flush.

get the door to sit tight to the seals

you can do this by adjusting the door lock pin (stricker) on the 'b' pillar.

Just loosen, adjust so it sits a few mm inwards, tighten and then check again

It appears to be.

That's something we've also tried; didn't help much.

when i doo the vapour barriers, I put an extra length along the bottom half of the door and tuck it in along the bottom, this stops any water pooling in the bottom and seeping thru.  I'vce had a 100% success rate doing it that way :)

Edit: Could it be the sunroof drains?

I poured some water down the outside of the window today to check how the water runs down the door. I noticed that water seems to be escaping through the membrane still as water is coming from the bottom of door card in two places (two drips). I have no choice but to remove the door card again and take better look. I was sure the membrane was sealed tight, so this is really annoying.

tell me about it unless you do it absolutely spot on unless your window seals are perfect water will always permeate through. Like Rubjonny says put an extra strip halfway down the door and tuck in.

I took the door card off today (after the heavy rain) and can see where it's leaking from:

Under the tape it was a huge hole; it wouldn't surprise me if water is getting through that as well.

I'm not really sure how to add the additional piece at the bottom. The old vapour barrier is a mess as it is; would it be better to buy a new one? Do VW still stock these?

rip the whole thing off and start again with fresh sheeting.  VW seall foam stuff that has to be cut down, but I just used plastic dust sheets, I got a MASSIVE sheet for liek £10 from focus, its done 4 cars so far and still loads left.

When the sheet is off, you'll see a length of door screen along the middle of the door, stick a short bit of sheet to that and tuck it in at the bottom, before sticking on the top sheet :)

Thanks but I think the method you suggest is the best option.
