Can anyone advise me on whether the standard Edition 30 stereo should play MP3's or not? I just ordered the car with the standard stereo as I intend fitting an Alpine iDA-X001 at some point when it arrives. I'm pretty sure the dealer told me it did - but when I tried it with several MP3 CD's from my previous car, it spat them out and displayed 'ERROR DATA' (or something like that!)

Hi P3eps,
I never tried MP3's in my std head unit. However if you are going to change the head unit anyway it rather negates the need for the standard head unit to play MP3's or not. Get it changed as soon a possible and remember that the head unit is only as good as it's speakers, which aren't brilliant. You also have to consider that the standard head unit filters out certain frequencies at certain volumes through it's built in digital sound processor. With an aftermarket head unit you will get all the frequencies at all volumes and this will show by giving extra distortions from the speakers. I changed my head unit and the speakers definitely sounded worse after the change. I ended up getting all round new speakers and a sub and amp and now the sound is amazing. Ask some of the guys who went down to GTI International on Saturday and they will confirm what a difference it makes

When looking through the manual just now for the RCD300 there are 2 different versions... 1 has a plain front, and 1 has MP3 written on it. Surprisingly the one with MP3 written on it plays MP3's, and the one without doesnt! Mine does not have MP3 on the front!
I'm 99% sure the dealer told me the stereo played MP3's, but I wasnt that interested as I'm changing it soon. The Alpine iDA-X001 is in short supply at the moment though and my pre-order may not arrive for another few weeks.
Hurdy - I'll see how I get on with the standard speakers, and then maybe see about changing them. I'm not really up for a sub though... I'd rather have my golf clubs in the boot!!

I personally have only ever seen imports with the MP3 labeled RCD500s.

Can anyone with a standard spec stereo tell me whether their RCD300 can play MP3's?!
I want more ammo for when I go to VW with my huge list of complaints so far!!

Mine doesn't.

As someone else has already said, if there's no MP3 writing on the front below the cd slot then it will not play MP3. I didn't know this till I got the car and I'm not happy about it either.

What other problems have you had?

What other problems have you had?
The car has a deep scratch on the front bumper, the passenger door will not open at all, and they wouldnt give me the complimentry bottle of oil everyone else seems to have got... as well as being told the stereo played MP3's!
The salesman seemed to have no interest in the whole sale - and seems to have no interest in getting my problems solved.
I'd been looking forward to getting the car for 14 weeks (despite being told 8-12), and the salesman successfully managed to put a total downer on my whole weekend by being patronising ("have you tried pressing the button on the remote twice" - then going and trying it himself looking smug, and then like a total pr1ck when it didnt work!) and telling me I have to take the car back in on Wed to get it fixed.
This is my first VW experience. The car (despite its faults) is GREAT - but the dealer has put me right off

They are salespeople and are just scumbags at the end of the day, incapable of any other line of work.
In any case, I thought it depended how you wrote the CD? If I want to listen to MP3's on my RCD300 I have to tell my CD writing program to convert the MP3's to CD format?

An MP3 capable stereo should be able to play the songs as MP3, aswell as converted to audio format. The whole point in an MP3 stereo is that you can squeeze about 10 albums on 1 disk still in MP3 format - and the stereo will play it!

Our RCD500 does not play MP3's..... though i not really tried yet....
Sorry not much help.

Buy a Dension Ice Link plus cable off ebay, use part of Docs instructions in fitting a nokia car phone kit (part one) and connect your ipod to your head unit. Your entire cd collection at the press of a button for an afternoons work and £80. I did it and i'm useless (she's told me so often, i now accept it! :undecided:)
