Ho Ho Ho
Just been to the GTI International show and had a jolly good day with guys from the forum
Decided that I was going to take the "old" Ed30 for a few blasts down the 1/4 mile to see how she's doing
Bl00dy fast I can tell you
Couldn't get a 0-60 time at the GTI springfest at the Pod, but this time it's good news......
0-60 in 5.66 seconds
Standing quarter in 14.47 seconds (and that's with 3/4 tank of fuel and my bloody heavy sub in the back )
Double good news was at the end of the day I got the runner up trophy for the 1/4 mile in the MKV class...and that was only outdone by The awesome GTI car with all its remaps, intake, exhaust etc (no sour grapes really :embarassed:)
Just read in the VW driver mag that the manual got 5.6 secs 0-60 and I suppose my actual figures give theirs credance :smug:
Also spotted a new S3 go down the strip 0-60 in 5.85 seconds and standing quarter in 14.45.
All we need to do now is get someone to do the 1/4 mile with a remapped ED 30
*Now then where's that performance upgrade catalogue*

5.66????? woah!! urs all standard??? thats a second quicker than the book! however that is 0.62...
im going tomorrow so should be good. wish i had mine, gotta wait till end of july if its on time!! :(

Yup, stock.
Went down in the morning too, just after an absolute downpour and still got 0-60 in 6.02secs :smug:. So, I would still fancy my chances against an R32 even in the wet :smug:

Nice one there Hurdy,,
-
Were those numbers acheved with Launch Control?
Damn fast! Can't believe it!!!
Mine is manual, how can one get below 6 with manual ?! :embarassed:

Yes, I used launch control for the first time and got it spot on right. Pulls like a train from the off. I was up against a modded MKV GTI and left it for dead :smug:
I would imagine getting a manual to achieve 0-60 in under 6 seconds would involve dialling in 3.5-4k revs, slipping the clutch off the line with the traction control off and two extremely violently aggressive gear changes. VW Driver said that when they achieved 5.6 seconds for their 0-60 time that:-
"our brutal full-throttle powershifting techniques, necessary to achieve maximum acceleration from the manual gearbox, would never be considered acceptable for normal use"
-

what a meaningless test!
-
went today and saw a few e30s run, they all completly wiped out the book speed. all around the 6 second mark
-
hmmm I am SOOOO confused... wondering whether to change to manual    I'm so fickle :embarassed:
-
you were proper chuffed with those times werent u hurdy! fair play to you!
and even more so when u got your trophy..whats it like?

read a test which said that DSG is actually slower than manual. Launch Control was not mentioned.

Don't choose your transmission because of 1 or 2 tenths of a second on a 0-60 run - consider what (and how) you want to drive all the time, real world driving is more more than a blast from the lights.
-
Mine's run in now and I've got to say, the pull from any gear is impressive, but above 4000rpm the thing just goes intergalactic. Put it this way, I accelerated in third up to the red line and I was just thrown back in the seat. I can totally believe the times you were getting Hurdy. All I can say is awsome!

1/4 mile time was still slower than GTI Springfest, so I wonder what the 0-60 would have been there
Off up to Lake District soon, so I'll have to catch up with a lot of posts next weekend
-
RE: Pic above.... 0-6 mph was 5.66 secs
These new VWs are sure getting lardy!
-
I was waiting for someone to spot that. All the printouts were the same. I've just noticed the results are on a website at the bottom of the printout
-
what is the 0-60mph for a standard 5 door DSG GTi hurdy, any ideas? all the mags say 6.9 secs but thats total horse sh!t,

that's obvious.
manual for me, I like to polish that knob with my right hand
-
well then it'll have to be DSG as I can always drive manual in my Mk2 GTI 16v - which will probably get a 1.8T conversion 3/4 years down the line. I didn't like the manual Ed30 because try as I might, I ALWAYS got a nasty jolt every time I changed gear if I was accelerating quite fast. I would have put this down to my driving skills - or lack of them - but I have never had this problem in another car and I have owned a Subaru Impreza STI in the past. I just put it down to the power of the car - but then the Subaru was producing 260bhp?! I would have to be VERY careful in my gear changes to avoid the dreaded jolt in the Edition 30.
Oh and by the way... whats 'brutal full-throttle powershifting techniques' as I read this in VW Driver magazine and were wondering what the meant exactly? :undecided:
-
trophy looks good :afro:
enjoy the lake district

Great times Hurdy! Nice to see all the GTI's/R32's on the M6 on Saturday, was quite jealous as I returned from work watching all the dubs going the other way! Wanted to go yesterday but was told by the boss that my services were required at home  Is it an annual event?

According to Wikipedia:
Powershifting (a.k.a. flat shifting, full throttle shift, or clutchless shift) is a method of shifting used with manual transmissions to reduce the time where the driving wheels are not powered.
Unlike a normal gearchange in a manual transmission, a powershift does not utilize the clutch at all. Instead, the gear lever is "ripped" from gear to gear. If tried with a road car, this can cause catastrophic damage if not selected in the right RPM range, especially if the gearbox doesn't have synchromesh.
OMG    WHAT ON EARTH ARE VW DRIVER MAG UPTO? Do they test all their cars like this?! Thats not a meaningful 0-60 time at all.... I'm really suprised that VW let them get away with it. Changing gears on a manual WITHOUT using the clutch - thats madness. I'm sure they don't do that with every test car so why the manual GTI? Maybe someone over there just wants to show that manual is faster than DSG.... it confused the hell out of me when I read the 0-60 time for the manual on a standard GTI in VW Driver mag as being 6 seconds - versus 6.2 for the DSG... but that explains it all.

It is quite possibe to change gear in a manual either up or down without using a clutch. You have to make sure your revs at spot on or else there's a horrible crunching noise.
I think there is adequate warning in the article that this should not be done in a normal road going car. Therefore they imply that the gearbox would need to be modified to allow this "violent" gear change method.
I'm personally really happy with the DSG, I think the balance between automatic and manual overide is definatley the way forward.
For people that argue you are losing control to a computer and that the fun is taken away. I ask how far would they get without power steering, or ABS, or traction control, etc.
I drive mainly with the paddles unless I'm in heavy traffic.

lmao, thats great, id neva friggin try it tho!

Have to agree with you on DSG... the words that VW Driver used - i.e. 'brutal' and 'ripped' don't sound like they got the revs spot on
