This is interesting, I haven't had time to look at the GTI figures but VW are reported to come out quite well

But remember they are comparing the manufacturers stated crank hp against their measured wheel hp. A normal rolling road would correct maybe +10-12% to get crank hp. As they seem to connect directly to the axles I dont know what loses are involved, but there will be some through the transmission.
The ED30 is very close to the R32 though.

if 97% of stated 230hp are measured at the wheels - that's great!

Just reading the article now. They admitted they full throttle powershifted the gearbox somewhat but power to weights are 172ps/ton for the ED30 and 159ps/ton for the R. Obviously the ED30 needs a dry road though!

As usual, "headline" figures often don't tell the full story. The RS4 was tested with only 600 miles (1080kms) on the clock.
It is a well-known fact that all engines (and VAG motors in particular) will produce more power when they are well and truely run in. Indeed, my last S4 only really felt "properly" run in when it had about 12 or 13k miles. It also started to give slightly better fuel economy around this time too.
The Bimmer M5 was tested at 12500kms, the Golf GTI at 8600kms, an Audi A4 1.9 TDI at 3500kms, and the new S3 at 1350kms (but interestingly, they used 99RON fuel, when 98RON had been used in the other petrols! :nerd:)
As Mark Twain said, "there are lies, damned lies, and then statistics". That should interject some more thoughts!
