I have yet got this car started im just wondering if i can find out if its got PAS. the owner broke the alarm fob some im just tracing wires back to remove immob and alarm. what does the PAS pump look like and where is it on these. or easy question did the 1989 model come with PAS or not?
cheers kelso

dont think PAS was standard. Look for the fluid reservoir with red cap. The PAS pump is belt driven next to your water pump (near bottom of cam belt cover) drivers side.
If it has not got PAS steering will be heavy when parking.

i'll take a look tonight thanks for the advice.
What kind of job is it to convert to PAS? and how much for parts just roughly :)
thanks again!

converted a 1.8 driver to PAS about 5 years ago. Collected the bits from scappers over a period of months. You will need, pump, pulleys, rack, reservoir, hoses and the odd bracket (we bought an exchange rack from GSF). Used my GTI with PAS as a guide - very useful.
For price have a look on ebay / GSF. But we spent about £100
Took a very long saturday to do the job

thank you for the list of parts mate much appreciated! :D

Mew and I have pretty much everything required to convert a car to powersteering for sale if your interested? :)
-
pas was never standard unfortunatly!
you need:
Rack & track rod ends
Pipes
Reservoir & bracket
Pump & brackets
Outer crank pulley
Rack->column universal joint
UJ boot
Bracket from the front of the block to hold the pipes up
Bracket from passenger side chassis leg to hold pipes and prevent them rubbing on the brake line
Fill the system with 2l of Dexron II ATF, to bleed leave the cap off & turn the rack from lock to lock a few times keeping the level topped up.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

PAS only became standard on the MK2 Gti in 1991 was standard from 1990 on the 16V however do not us the pas pump mounting bracket for a 16v on an 8v it will not fit everything else though is the same.
be care ful with people selling the kits on ebay that they are complete and have the correct bracket for an 8v usually the parts missed out are the powersteering fluid tank bracket and the steering column UJ joint which is different also to the standard one and bolts.
one of our most coman questions is I bought a kit off ebay and need.....
Would help you out if we had one in stock but only got 16V set ups at present
-
thanks guys most appreciated! I have just bought a full setup off a golf breaker for £55 is that cheap or expensive?
its the 16v one but will fit right? appart from some brackets?
-
pretty good price! The 16v setup is identical apart from some of the engine block brackets, which you can get off any 8v mk2 with PAS :)
The 16v PAS rack is said to be quicker than the 8v PAS racks too
-
ah lovely mate, thanks to all :D
-
very good price good luck with the mounting bracket though every one I have seen come up on ebay goes for silly money :-(
although the way round it is to fit a 2litre block from a mk3 gti and use a mk3 pas bracket lol

Wouldn't that effect the turning circle or the number of turns lock to lock? Or have I just made that up? I mean, it's likely I've only had two cups of tea today.

yeah thats exactly right :)
its only what 'they' say though
