Thought I'd post a poll on this subject and let you air your own views as well.
As this is an emotive subject and often a Yes or No vote I have allowed you to post 2 votes to the options listed.

More from the petition creator (Paul Smith of Safe Speed):
"After 15 years of speed cameras on British roads, neither road deaths nor hospitalisations have fallen as expected.
Drivers know as if by instinct that speed cameras are the wrong road safety policy. The extensive research and analysis conducted by the Safe Speed road safety campaign confirms that drivers have been right all along. Far from making our roads safer, speed cameras have replaced genuine life saving policies and distracted everyone from more important safety factors.
Instead...
- We must have road safety policies based on skills, attitudes and responsibilities
- We must have effective roads policing especially to deal with 'rogue drivers'
- We must avoid needlessly prosecuting skilled and responsible drivers driving safely
- We must measure what is important, not make important that which is easily measured - and you can't measure safe driving in miles per hour"
I know some of you have already signed the petition but with the deadline of only 26 June it would be good to get some more support.

Are we referring just to fixed speed cameras in this poll?

yeah i did see your thread  will look into that further :afro:

Unattended fixed cameras - yes. Those which make no distinction between any given road condition and which have been located under the guise of national road safety policy to reduce the number of road deaths - a very debatable point given the latest government statistics.

Slightly off topic as usual, but I had to do an advanced driving course when I had a company car. Started pretty badly unfortunately... I had a Volvo S40 which I'd had for about two months. As we walked over to the car the assessor said 'How often do you check your oil?' thinking on my feet I said 'every week'. Good he said. When we got to the car he said 'Show me how you check the oil' So I fumbled around and found the bonnet release, opened the bonnet and stared aimlessly at the engine. No dipstick anywhere... I looked around for what seemed ages, no dipstick, no holes, nothing... just a big grey plastic cover. He looked at me, scribbled something on his clipboard and said 'you don't know where it is do you?'. He reached into the engine bay and unscrewed the oil filler cap... the dipstick was fixed to the underside of the bl33ding cap! What a stupid place for it? I was so embarrassed... He then said 'When did you last check the condition of your tyres and what are the correct pressures?' I just looked at him and shook my head... I felt like a naughty school kid, caught red handed!
