Hi all
does anyone alse have a ' tappity ' engine on idle ...?
sounds fine when on the move, hoping that i don't have a problem and that this a characteristic of the engine ( although not a nice one ! )

yup, mines a bit more tappity than i would like.
So are the other 3 I have had a chance to listen to, but as you say, soon goes when on the move.
-
It's normal, also irrespective of exhaust system.
-
I think it's injector noise you can hear, the fuel system run's at massive pressure compared to lesser cars.
-
mines been like that since day 1 and someone on here said it reminds them of the an old ford engine which sounded like that. My dealer said its normal.

It's a small 'price' to pay for what is a superb engine.

They make a much sweeter noise at the other end of the rev range... so I'm told?!
-
The smallest touch to the throttle and any tappet noise soon is gone  lol, someone once said "is it a diesel?" when it was at idle. They wont be coming in it again.
IMHO GTI sounds much better on the far side of 5000 rpm than both the VXR and Megane Renault Sport. After giving it large in first gear and then in to second with your foot off throttle, turbo makes quite a nice "de-spooling" noise too
-
....And on a Milltek it all sounds even better!
-
Yup - they all do that. Was a little strange at first as I had a GT TDI before. So was like mmmmmmmm?

Just a query... my car on start up has teh faint tappety noise, onces its warmed up the tappety noise seems to marginally (ever so) increase a little... its even there after a drive and when idling in traffic... is this normal, or should the tappety noise disapear when its been running for a bit.
The tappety noise does go when you raise the revs over 2k and its sounds extremely nice when you hit 5k + just a tad concerned that my engine is a bit worse for wear?
I come from a Fabia vRS with the PD TDi engine, so its an improvement over that, but on occasions it could be mistaken as a diesel
-
sounded normal to me, sadly that is what they're like.

As has been said, it's not tappets you hear, it's the injectors. And it's normal. My GTI ('07) with all of 200KM on the clock (It was delivered on Wednesday :D) does it too and so does my other car ('06 BMW E90 320 Si).

Thanks Mark
