Ok, the first one: -
The connector with the orange bulb is my NEW connector from my smoked indicators.
Look at the shape of the connector... SQUARE
Now look at the shape of the connector that was already in OVAL
So I CANNOT connect my new smoked fogs up cos the existing connectors wont fit to the old ones...
also, i cant change the bulbs over, cos the pins on the orange bulbs are off-set and my clear bulbs pins are directly above each other!!!
...
Now look at picture two.
The yellow circles are the areas to concentrate on.
The left circle shows the OVAL (ish) connector that fits my OVAL connector from my bulbs (see pic 1) ... so I CANNOT connect the new smoked foglights up!!! ...
The right hand side yellow circle is the "fog light adjuster" ... this seems to be holding my fogs in although the screws have been removed. I looked at the haynes manual and it doesnt even mention the adjuster.. it just says "remove screws and fog light comes out"... this isnt the case.
... can ANYONE help me with this? I wanted my new stuff put in tonight but they dont seem to fit... even tho I went to the VW garage and STATED
GOLF GTI 1997 MK3
... anyone?
:'(
-
i had the same prob on my old polo, i put clear indicators with orange bulbs in.. originally it was white bulbs, with orange shells.
i had to hacksaw the newer (i think oval) ones to get to the pins and put spade connectors on the cables and connected those to the indicators :)
-
im not hacking these to bits... if they dont fit, there going back and ill have my hard earned... (ok my earned) cash back!
-
if you cant get the right fitting with the right colour bulbs (i have a hunch you wont) the other option may be to buy the right connectors too.. but.. i found that what cable was there wasnt very long.
-
im not rewiring indicators... the haynes manual shows SQUARE connectors.. like my new smoked lights... but my current ones are OVAL... I wanna know why and i want OVAL ones ordered!!
-
wwell the thing is.. you cant have smoked ones without orange bulbs.. and orange bulbs use the other type of fitting.. so either you hack em up like i did, put on new connectors, or send em back.
holla back with how u get on.
-
it CAME WITH these orange bulbs...
-
yeah i know.. no need to shout ;)
but they're diff shapes for a reason.. i.e. the diff bulb fitments.. i think you wont get one the oval shape that'll take orange bulbs..
-
sorry mate didnt mean to shout. ... i was proper pissed off last nite.
so... this connector has orange bulbs and wont fit a sqaure connector'd car...
so what car comes with square connectors? and why change them?
anyone know what shape their car connectors are?
-
I'll check me polo later too coz they look the same (its a '96) :)
-
Im at work so I phone me ol' lad and hes been to see the parts guy at VW.
Ive been given sum new bulb holders for FREE and sum new connectors for FREE and also shown how to remove the fog holder thingy for FREE
but yea id still like to know what connectors other people have cos this is puzzling me as to why i have oval ones and the haynes book/VW say they should be square on a '97 Golf.
cheerz
-
all sorted out for free? nice one!
-
I have a way with words...
and I have immense charm 8)
... ill try and get a pic later if I get em fitted tonight.
before and after shot :D

it was dark by the time I was home from work.. and i still had to get em fit... so you'll have to wait for daylight pics!

black_gti...
i'm at almost exactly the same point with my car. had no problem with the fogs though.
my car has the rounded stuff just like yours.
i have an ETKA number for what might be the right part...
6k0 953 123 b
do you know if thats right?
-
goto a VW dealership and tell em that a square dont fit a circle ... and u want the correct connectors.
I got em free cos they were classed as "bit and bobs" and werent gonna be used...
-
yeah i did, they gave me that etka number and were being fags about ordering them if they might be the wrong ones. so i dont wanna commit to order unless i know they'll be right (they cant tell from the etka)
does yours have a part number on?
-
been back again after work. the guy i spoke to this morning wasn't there.. spoke to a younger guy that i spoke to last week, along with another guy. they were cool, ended up suggesting the same part as dude this morning. they should be about 2 days and are cool with me not takin if its the wrong part :)
-
went back today to pick up my order.. guess what.. they have the wrong ones!!! i had to run back around to work and actually take my car around and show them that i'm not lying about the connector on the car..
so after all that it, appears as though vw changed the connector on the '98 mk3s, the very very last ones, and all cars before have the round style... so etka defaults to the newest part.
finally got the right ones on order, and should have em early next week.
means no smoked lights + fog fitting again this weekend though :(
i'll post the right ETKA number up once i have em.
i know it ended in 123E, so it might be 6k0 953 123 E
( 6K0 953 123 B was the wrong one...)
-
I knew I had summet to do... my part number for my smoked indicators is...
1HO 953 049 E
Turnsignal
-
hmm definitely had a E on the end.. will verify when mine turns up, pretty sure they know what they've ordered! (i hope!)

No offence mate, but I think the Mk3 looks far classier with the standard indicators/fogs. You just about get away with it having a black example, but I suspect they'd look pretty poo on any other colour. But then again, ronnied up Golfs are one of my own personal pet peeves (It looks so good as it is, why on earth would you change it?), so that may be swaying my opinion slightly. And don't even get me started on twin/Mk4 headlamp conversions. Ever wonder why VW didn't design the Mk3 with twin headlamps? Because they don't look very good at all.
-
i agree about the twin headlights thing, but mk4 style ones are ok if done quite well...
smoked/indicators are fogs are much better.. i've seen them on a blue anniversary car (they come as standard on those) and it looks brilliant.

jsut been and got em, just compared and they're 1HO 953 123 E
might be clear ones.. argggggggg will kill em!!
-
Just out of interest, is it possible to get just a clear fog light lens from a VW dealer or will they try and sell me the whole lighting unit? A couple of stones decided to go through the front of my offside front fog, so the lens is buggered, but the bulb was untouched so the light still works fine.
-
i believe you have to the whole unit - the glass bit seems stuck on...
i'll have some for sale soon ;)
-
right been back to the parts dept. next door..
the part number you gave me black_gti is for the smoked, indicator housing not just the bulb holder, i'm guessing it came with the right ones?
the confusion is the language the etka uses
a bulb holder for orange indicators holds a white bulb - doh!
a bulb holder for smoked indicators holds an orange bulb - in etka speak smoked is 'dimmed'
the right part number (i hope) is.... 1HO 953 123 F
-
All I bought were the smoked covers.
The indicator unit was a "unit" and included a bulb holder. ?25 each (approx) and bulb
The blanking plate, was just a smoked blanking plate
The Smoked fog was JUST a cover... everything else was already there...u only need the FULL unit if u dont have fogs...
-
really!.. the kit i got came with full smoked fogs.. didn't know there was a cover.
so you have a plastic cover over your clear fogs?
whereas i'll have fully glass smoked ones
sounds like the rest will match though.
-
???
U cant see the fog unit...
All there is is a grey block in the back (which I penned black with a permanent marker cos i didnt realise it wasnt visible)
Theres the big round lense and the cover that sits over it all... a full fog unit costs ?100+ each
U just need the cover.
-
the set i paid 99 quid for contained
full smoked indicator assembly, with orange bulbs, and wrong bulb holders (lol)
smoked blanking plate
full smoked fog unit, without bulbs.
bulb holders are 8.48 to replace with the right ones.
-
This is all u need for a VW GOLF GTI 1997
Indicator - 1H0 953 049 E
Fog - 1H0 941 723 B
Fog = "Headlamp Unit Dimm"
Unit??? though the "block that the lense" sits in isnt included..cos ya dont need it.. u just need the smoked part!
-
lmao.. i went next door for the bulb holder, vw had one, but not the pair.
back to get the other from them tomorrow apparently. haha
what a saga :)
-

ok, just been next door and bought a pair.. what a bloody saga these lights have been.
when i ordered them they came broken, but (under agreement with the seller) i glued them together (the point they were broken at was one of the pressure bits that holds each bit to another..) but its been 3 months now and no replacement. the problem is that they let in condensation on one side due to the broken part.
just been in teh dealership next door and walked out with a pair of the "Unit dimm" bits.. they're 18 quid each, cost 44 inc vat.
be glad to have it sorted soon :)
can remove the broken, swap in the new dub ones... and get my refund (arranged that already... )
btw.. your parts list doesnt have the number for the smoked blanking plate that sits between the indicator and the fog.
*crosses fingers its alright this time*
