Title: cash not king with stealer
Post by: Tezza on 09 June 2007, 12:05
Still looking for my GTI & thanks to those who have given me advice before - all about imports.

Made two offers recently for a 1 year old - both £1k under the asking price and would have been happy to pay cash (well bankers draft) there and then - both stealers did not want to know............ Never bought a car from a stealer before and maybe I am out of touch............

Getting desparate now but do want a deal - might go and buy a banger with tax/mot for a couple of mths just so I can get about.

Is cash no good any more or just for new cars?

Any experinces???????????

Theres many factors in how much you can get off.
How long its been there, how much it owes them, how easy they think they can shift it, how much margin is in it, who you speak too, time of the year etc etc the list goes on.

Cash is most definetly not king when the dealer can make a huge profit by selling a finance package to someone else.

I would agree, as "cash" doesn't have quite the same meaning as it did 10-15 years ago.  If you are talking about a second or third hand car for from a small dealer, then yes a bundle of fifties at the end of the slow week would always secure a discount.  These days at main dealers there is more incentive for the individual salesman and the dealer to sell finance, that sometimes it seems they would rather you walked away than pay "cash".  With regards to pysically handling cash, main dealers will always prefer a bankers draft or a debit card transaction, so theres no such thing as a cash discount these days at large dealers.  Unless anyone knows any different.  :smug:

Why not buy an import? You can be driving around in a brand spanker 07 reg, full UK spec car with 18" Monzas for the price of an 05 plate used car from a stealer. No brainer really.
