Title: How do i mount 130mm mid & tweeter in the dash of a mk2 ??
Post by: AZIM on 07 June 2007, 20:41
Ive got loads of MB QUARTS speakers lying around , so i thought id use them in my new motor im building.

Ive got a set of 3 way components which consists of bass 160mm mid 130mm & 1" tweeter.

Ive also got 130mm coaxials which could be used as part of the 3 way components .

Any suggestions on how to mount the 130mm & tweeter or coaxials in the dash location eg maybe do a dash build using fibre glass & mdf.
Any advice on angling components would be appreciated.
The dash is out of the car at the moment so i could do the work before installing it.

Any pics of similar work would be appreciated

130 mm will nearly fit in the standard dash locations, just need a bit more depth, if you can do that I would get the 130mm componants in there, but thats only because i like things looking stock ( probably because ive been robbed before!)

I would fit the 160mm in the doors angled slightly upwards if possible depending on if they will fit in the stock mountings ( if you have them on your mk2 ) or if you are going to make a build.

and leave the 130mm coaxes but if you really wanted to put them somewhere, i would put them in a small build where the front and back doors seperate, near where the front seatbelts dissapear into the pillar but nearer to the roof, unless of course you just fancied sticking them in the back somewhere?!

and the tweeters either ( if you want to do a proper job) in the windscreen/door pillars, there is a sticky thread on here about how to make it look good. or (for quick and easy!) on the roof lining near where the grabhandles would be in the back, but in the front, if there was any!

as for the angle of them all, just as 'towards' the listener as possible really, so, basically if you could use them as headphones that would be best!

tommk3cab thanks for the reply.I agree withnearly all of what youve said .
There are two points im concerned about .
1. When i previously fitted 130mm components in the dash location , i found the air vent plastic tube which runs directly underneath stops me fitting the speakers flush as id like .
Is there any way of deforming the vent tube without damaging it (Heat it & reshape it).

Also would the rear of the mirrors not be a good position to angle the tweeters or is half way up the a post the best position .

P.S ive got 2 amps for the system
Denon dca800 & Kicker ZR240 for the 15"Celestion ADH (and Phoenix Gold 215x eq)
                                Cheers AZIM

thats what i ment when i said the 130mms in the dash will need a bit more depth to fit. with the dash out i thought you may be able to see a way to give them a bit more depth, we never could?!
we didnt even see it was part of the vent system just realised they didnt fit and replace with 10 cms, 13s would be better though, if they would/could fit. where does that particular piece of the vent system go to and where does it come from? ( if you can see?!) unless it can be moved easy that idea may be screwed then!

http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=159311
thats the thread about the tweeters in the post I said about, at the end they look mint, its in a mk3 but it will be the same idea. The only thing that may cause you problems is you will need tweeters with cups for this kind of build really and i dont know if you have cups with yours?, it is possible to do it without cups though.

as long as there is kind of a direct path to your ear from the tweeter it should be sound ( so pretty much if you can see them its ok!) mid post will be slightly better as its more inline with your ear, but lower down will be nearly as good i would have thought. the closer the better really as long as its a balanced sound with the rest of your system.

depends a lot on what music you like, with a 15 inch sub i assume hip hop or d+b?.

tommk3cab:where does that particular piece of the vent system go to and where does it come from? .

It comes from the center of the dash & branches out to the side air vents .
It can be removed & modded .
I assume you can platic weld it into the shape you require, to give clearance to the mids without noticible effects to the flow of air to the vents.

Maybe i should get a spare one & use a hot air gun to try & deform it to the shape required.

The Clestion ADH15 in a sealed box is a great sub for sq in my opinion, lends it self well to all music

i would try changing one if it wasnt too much hatle to get a second hand one or and old one.

the reason i mentioned the music you listen too is because if you listen to music with a lot of voices then you may not want the tweeters too close to you as it may sound slightly unbalanced, for drum and bass and dance type music though, pretty much the closer the tweeter the better, as long as you have the bass to cope with the, in effect amplified high notes ( although not amplified just closer to you)
you can usually balance the sound pretty well on HU's themselves nowadays anyway, to a degree anyway.

That lot was a bit deeper than i was expecting.

I think i will mount the tweeters near the mids , in the back of the door mirrors.
This would be good for all kinds of music, i should be able to angle them a little as i have a few different speaker mounts for the tweeters.

I have the tweeters in my mk2 on the mirror backings, it really is the easiest location, and gives good results.  I think you'd be hard pushed to fabricate a pillar builds on a mk2, as the trims are very narrow - they'd need to be pretty small drivers.

I've actually got the mirror backing trims screwed to the door - I cut off the mounting lugs and drilled through then countersunk - I was pretty sure that the weight of the tweeter would eventually pull the trims off.

When my install is finished, I'll post up some pics, but I can't promise when that'll be!

fairplay then stick them there, you wont notice much difference just the ones in the thread I linked to looked proper mint and I cant wait to do mine in a similar way! its been a long time since i had anything to do with mk 2's, I remembered running some wires for some roof lining mounted tweeters through the pillars, but i cant remember what the pillars looked like, thought they were pretty similar to mk3's, obviously not!

If I thought I could get away with mounting my tweeters in the a pillars, I'd definitely have a go, but it looks like more trouble than it's worth!

When I was experimenting with locations, it did sound good with the tweets blu-tacked to the base of the a pillars, but the mirror backings aren't that far away.  It's a shame that the trims aren't a little deeper, otherwise I'd try flush mounting.  I've got some JBL tweets in there at the moment, but I may be upgrading soon, so I'll wait until everything is finished, then get some pics up.

AZIM, I take it you have the relavent active crossovers if you're going for a 3-way front end?  I'm having enough trouble with 2-way!

the pillar design in the thread i posted could be modded so they didn't sink behind the pillars as much as sat on them, if that makes sense? still may be to much hastle though, as i said its been a long time! wont make too much sound difference anyway, its just if your really into the ' look ', im not really, dont look at my stereo too often!

Heyho Qoute:It's a shame that the trims aren't a little deeper, otherwise I'd try flush mounting.

How hard can it be fitting the relavant sized mdf ontop of the mirror bases to allow you to fit the tweeters flush. After a little retrim it will be hard to spot the difference.

Yes i have a passive competition 3 way crossover for the components & i also have a Phoenix gold 215x which is 2 way crossover plus eq.(not sure how im gonna use this yet :undecided:

i would find that pretty awkward to get right to be fair, unless there was some way to carpet the mdf and mirror back together so the mirror backs looked fatter then, if thats what you ment, go for it if you reckon it would look sound, how do you adjust your mirrors though?! I assume not on the mirror back!

tommk3cab "how do you adjust your mirrors though?! I assume not on the mirror back!".

The mirror adjusters are on the door cards arent they???.
If you covered the thicker mirror backs with leather  or speaker  cloth you would hardly notice the difference from original.

yeah they are like little lemonade bottletop shaped things ( but a bit bigger, and black) arnt they! i forgot, been a long time since i had mk2 dealings, arguably the best mk golf though. im not too keen on the newer ones, ive always had a thing for a nice mk1 (especially the cabs!) as well.

dinx has the nicest mk1 cab ive seen. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1077

yeah if you can get the mirror backs off easily id go with that.

any luck with the vent tube reshaping?

Brought a 8v h reg golf off the back of a truck on the way to the breakers for 2 reasons .
1. it had some nice 5 spokes with good tyres all round worth £120 .
2. The body was pretty clean & straight & in black.

The story gos that the car engine packed up on the previous owner , who decided in anger to throw the keys into in distgust .
When he cooled down he couldnt start his car due to a alarm & immobilser.
He called the AA who hacked the loom under the dash area in a attempt to start it .
They also smashed the ignition barrel in this vain attempt.

This is when i brought it & decided to clean up all the wiring & replace the engine & dash (which were both nackerd).
All work under the bonnet is done & the car starts up.

Ive managed to repair nearly everything inside bar the indicators ,hazards & mfa.
Once these thing are repaired ill have the dash back on & adjust the heater vents to allow the 130mm components to sit in position.

This car is my last mk2 & a total diy product from start to finish. This will include any mods like Audi door handles & spray work (hopefully to a good standard).

Im a total novice but willing to learn as i go along .

thats nasty, you would have thought they could have hotwired a car pretty fast, especially without ripping the whole dash to shreads. nice to hear its chugging nicely again now though!

Thanks tp the great advice from the nice lads at Dubshack, i think the remaining dash problems should be solved tomorrow .

So in the next few days i should be ready to mod the heater vents (which dubshack are supplying).
I shall update with a few pictures to show you what progress ive made trying to make space for the components.
