my gear box, when in 1st of 2nd soujnds like it chouls belong in a tnk that has just driven across the sahara!!!
is this cos of wear and tear (my car had only done 84500) or do i need to change the oil in the gearbox???

oh yeah, my bro, veedubgti8v can vouch for the won derful noises that come from my car when im out driving......
and he would be the one that converted me to golfs, before i had passed my test......think it was the A-reg beut that did it!!!hah

i bet there is no oil in there! unless some bearings colapsed!!! my gearbox went at 170000 miles diff bearing colapsed!
park on level ground..... lock left hand down and at the passanger side wheel arch you should be able to see the oil filler hole (allen key plug) when filling the oil do it through this keep filling it until is slowly begins to flow back out of the hole normaly holds 2 litres sometimes 1500ml. once it stops flowing out of the hole it full !
the drain plug is under the box! bang under the diff!
