my car wont stop making this fu;king high pitch noise when it is sat at idle, i thought it was the fan belt rubbing on the cover but i have taken this off and it is still doing it!(i still think its the belt some how) ready to jump on the cu/t tbh, really had enough of it
-
Is the noise coming from near the fan belt and does it sound like a fan belt slipping noise ? If so I reckon it will be the tensioner. The ball bearings in them are self lubricating, but after years they dry out.
-
its more like a high pitch noise, like when you rub your finger round the top of a glass??
-
Gibby-Did you mean the cambelt tensioner???
I had a cambelt tensioner that ran dry on a passat with the 1.8 8v lump a few years back. It made a horrible screeching/whining/whistling sound, I gave it a quick blast with some WD40 and that shut it up. If it does turn out to be that it's probably safer to get it replaced mind you, my passat wasn't quite as cherised as your mk1 Ben.

Aye Tobz, cambelt tensioner. I had a fanbelt squeal on my old cab and it turned out to be the cambelt tensioner so I had it replaced. The bad news/good new is that the garage for safety reasons also changed the cambelt to be on the safe side.
Got an idea, take the fanbelt off and start your car up, if it still squeals it will more than likely be your cambelt tensioner, that's how I confirmed my problem.
P.S. I did try WD40 but it didn't make a difference.
-
ok guys will try that, but it doesnt happen until you have driven for a bit! random as fook! my belt is a little frayed so might try changing the fan belf first :undecided:
-
the doesn't happen until you've been driving for a bit is also consistent with a noisy cambelt tensioner as it has to get a bit hot before the noise starts. When was the belt/tensioner last done??? I'd consider getting it done sooner rather than later to be on the safe side.
-
right took the fan belt off, and if you turn the wheel that is front most before the alternator it sweeks, this is where the sound must be coming from when it is running, i guess this is the water pump? now does this mean the pump is on the way out or can i lube it up some how? :undecided: cam belt and tensioners are nearly new
-
If cambelt and tensioner have been done recently then I doubt it's that, but as Tobz said, when I had the problem it did take a while for it to start squealing. I don't know about the water pump so I wont comment on it, but you could try WD40 on all the wheels and see what happens, worth a try.

wd40 seems to have done the trick! whacked it with a hammer too!
