They doing a "pull everyone" in Birkenhead (near Camel Lairds if your local)
Did a full check for: MOT (clear) Insurance (Clear) Licence (no points etc)
Starts checking the car, only problem he could find was an exhaust mount missing (destroyed last night) and "Exhaust silencer does not reduce the noise emitted to a reasonable level, excessively noisey"
Got 10 days for MOT to prove its quiet.
Prohibition Notice served. I have 10 days to get MOT otherwise its removed from the road!
Rang MOT station who said "Their is no test for noise level, ring em up and tell em to F&&K OFF"
So, ring and tell em to take it off my car or MOT?
-
Bad luck mate  . I dont think the ploice are playing fair. I would write to the cheif constable.
Out of interest, what exhaust is it?
-
I'd be well fooked then because with a drilled airbox and Cobra full stainless system, it aint quiet ! Good job I don't live in Birkenhead then.
-
Custom build, and not heard a Mk2 thats anywhere near as noisy lol.
But MOT station said they cant check for noise level since their is no guideline for noise levels.
Am off for them to check it and other bits.
-
police = time wasting. they need to go and find some real criminals instead of us tax paying, law abiding people. Bunch of idiots.
-
^ Here here sir!
I'm all for them stopping people with out MOTs and Insurance and getting those dodgy sons-of-b!tches off the road, but once they've checked your paper work and it's all present and correct they should move on to someone who's actually breaking the law.
Around here when they do that they just have a van that reads every ones number plates, and then a couple of hundred yards up the road a couple of cars to stop anyone if something dodgy comes up. It's inconvenient as it slows the traffic right up - but again if it gets un-insured and un-safe cars off our streets I'll support it.

Agree with the above. They do that near my work in Southall. Suprising how many newish cars are not taxed, insured, mot's etc. It is good because if any of those crash into you, your basically fecked!
-
^ i'm sure the offending drivers with no MOT etc, will probably also be driving with no licence or insurance or be an imigrant. They'll prob get a fine of 40 quid or something equally pathetic and a ban on a licence they don't actually have. On the other hand, if for some reason one of my tyres is slightly bald i'm sure they could find a way to squeeze some money out of me for driving a dangerous vehicle. Our justice system sucks enormous cock.
-
That's another good point actually - an imigrant crashed into my brother-in-laws cab in an un-registered, un-texed, un-everythinged car - tried to do a runner up a one way road and got stopped by another cab coming the other way - and the police just took the guys word for it when he gave them a (obvioulsy fake) name and address! f**king useless b*st*rds!
They should think of better ways to punish these people. Cars are towed and crushed, but judging by the condition they're usually only worth about £200 tops anyway!
-
There is a law that dictates how loud your car or motorbike can sound and some police that are local to me carry DB meters to messure the noise level !
-
The phrase C0CKS springs to mind. The system shafts you if you try to make something of yourself and rewards you if you don't, might just feck off working and go on the rock and roll get all the benefits and plenty of time to myself, or Emigrate somewhere like ooh Iraq lol would probably be an easier life pmsl.
-
Yeh.. specially with all the Doles (Poles) coming into the country... a lot of their cars are untaxed and uninsured. Makes ya sick
-
get it MOT'd and show them the new certificate as proof that it is road legal.
i had a fiesta failed on its MOT for excessive noise, it had 1 cherry bomb silencer... was very loud.
-
They cant check the noise level since no guideline for noise level.
At what rpm should it be checked? Drive past or stationary?
You cant check for noise, but can pull "in my opion".
Well mine says its not that loud.
But garage say rather than hassle, MOT it.
So i get to spend money because the VOSA fella couldnt find anything wrong with my car!
-
I thought they did check for the noise level of the exhaust as part of the MOT.
I think the only fair way to test the noise would be at idle, because every car makes more noise when it's revved.
You shouldn't need to get an new MOT, I lent my old Mk3 16v to a mate who got pulled over on the M1 for having a rear light out. So he got a producer and I had to go with him to the local Police station with the current MOT to prove that it was still road legal. Didn't need to get a new one.
Your MOT cert covers you for 1 year, that should be end of story.
I got pulled in the same car a few months before this for a random roadside Police check, they checked lights, tyres and even emmissions, but not noise levels.
I'm always seeing Polish and Latvian cars in London, it's very annoying because they can't see properly (being left hand drive) and make bad manouvers, and most likely won't have had an MOT or even insurance cover for this country. I try to steer clear of them.

damn straight.

Does that include Rallye drivers too !
-
and g60 drivers
-
Sounds like you are running an illegal exhaust with it being too loud, just re mot it and if it passes then you are ok but if not then swap it and go and show them within the time limit. Just one of those things that you aint gonna get out of im afraid.
Good luck.
-
the point is though that because exhausts are never sound checked to form any part of the MOT, an exhaust could never be deemed as "not road legal" in the first place.
No matter how loud it is, as long as you have a valid MOT i cant see what they'd be able to do.
-
Perhaps the MOT should include a noise level check then there's no grey area and everyone knows where they stand !

-
I think I see your point but who decides what is "unreasonably above the level expected" ? If there was a meter'd check then it would remove any uncertainty about what is too loud or expected from a similair vehicle with a silencer in average condidtion. Lets be fair that wording is such a generalization that its no mystery that it results in the sort of thing that this thread is about.
-
The fact of the matter is that unless you reduce its noise or get an mot to state the noise is not excessive then you are gonna get busted, thats all im trying to get across, i fully agree with all the grey areas that are mentioned but you aint gonna get out of it unless you do as they ask. You could fight them all the way but it aint gonna get you anywhere, if you dont do it within the time limit then they can take your car and you wont be able to stop them unfortunately, bit excessive i know but what can you do?
-
Ive just MOT'd the mk2.
They let me MOT it myself
IF the coppers ask where i got it done...im going to say ''did it meself''
-
But thats it, whats noisy to one, isnt to another.
The fella doing the MOT say's in his opion its fine.
But it does need to have a set leval, then no gray or problem areas arise.
-
Thats my point exactly mate, I'm not deffending or condeming anyone who has a loud exhaust I'm just saying that its hard to know if your going to fall foul of a law without knowing that there's something set in stone saying "thats too loud" or "thats loud but still legal"
-
This is one subject i always get frustrated with. I've been told my exhaust was too loud in the past but luckily never been busted.
Look at some sports cars. Their exhausts as standard are deafening! I've had ferrari's pass me and almost deafen me!
