Title: Chipping the 150 BHP 1.8T - anyone done it ?
Post by: SJM on 23 April 2003, 13:50
So, I've read lots of exciting stuff showing me how much BHP I can squeeze out of my 1.8T - the APR chip seems to come out a winner - BUT - what I really want to know, is what the actual difference feels like !

Is it worth it ?  Will I need bigger wheels ? Does driveability suffer ?  Seems like a small price to pay per BHP - so I'm gagging - but just wanted so see if any other 1.8T owners have been brave enough, and what they thought of the difference!  ;D

I know where you are coming from bro - which way to chip?

Have been surfing upgrade websites for over year and finally went for an RVO upgrade this month. This is not a re-chipping (which is invasive) but a "flash programming" of the original VW chip. As such it takes 10-15 minutes only and is acheived via a laptop plugged into the vehicle diagnostic port only.

The cost is ?499 plus VAT but they can supply an progammable box to switch between modified and standard spec. at service time, for an extra ?160 if you wish.

Further "programming" is availiable at extra cost but the attaction for me was price, perfromance and simplicity.

As such, I have no intention of telling my insurance company as they would have nothing tofind (i.e. no new chip soldered into the ECU).

Performancequoted by the REVO dealer (one of 5 currently in the UK - mine in Iver, Bucks just west of Heathrow) is 212bhp !!!

If the 4Motion can do 7.1 seconds to 60 with 204 bhp lugging 360lbs more weight than a 2-wheel drive 1.8T then I recon I am down to 7 seconds to 60 easy...!

Next time a Civic Type-R goes past you - catch him up an surprise the slitty-eyed bastard!

Web site for REVO dealers can be surplied if you search engine is not up to it!

This mod has cetianly transformed my Turbo! Best of luck.

Hi,

I had my car chipped by APR last year. I got the 3 settings, standard, 95 and 98. I use Optimax in the car, (which makes a massive difference anyway - just run 2 tanks through and you'll notice a difference !) and always run the car in 95 mode.
You may ask will you notice a difference ? It's like sitting on a rocket ?:o. I've had friends in mine who have Impreza's, Porsche's and BMW's, they have been in my car and ALL were impressed with the performance. 0-60's will be about 6.5 secs !
I love it, every now and then I change it to standard mode to see what a slug I used to have, it's like driving with flat tyres, honestly !
I had insurance with Admiral, they wouldn't insure the car, but I moved to Greenlight insurance and they were excellent, I chose to inform them, it's up to the individual.
At GTI Int on Sunday they were offering 5 hours of chipping for free, I shall get the info for you.
Prepare to get your wallet out!
Sav

The company is RevoTechnik - www.revotechnik.com
It appears that this offer for 5 hours free may have only applied to GTi Int. but give them a sob story, who knows.
It doesn't make a little difference, it makes a massive difference, go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Hi,

does the RevoTechnik chip upgrade hugely effect fuel consumption?

Fuel consumption, when I first got the MK4 I treated nicely and only ever got 300 miles on a tank (Mk2 used to get nearer 400). Now with the APR chip, misbehaving all the time it's more like 300-350. I've yet to do a really long run but when I go to Cornwall I shall find out.

If you phone around the likes of Stealth, Awesome, etc. I'm sure they'll have a demo car for you guys to go out in.
I have 3 settings, but I just keep it in 95 mode, I'm happy with that, 98 mode is a supposed to be quicker but  only by 10bhp.
At GTi int the modified Mk4's were running 6.5's on 0-60, but I love it when you floor it in 5th doing 40mph, it just goes and goes.

Go on, unleash the real Gti in your golf !

If you go down the road of pumping the BHP (which I will ;D, due to be left for dead by a new Celica! :-[) does it require the filter system, exhaust etc to be uprated too or does that just add further....

Cheers guys

just a short 1. revo was the only reason i kept my golf 20v turbo. I brought it and the next day i was going to sell it becouse it was so slow. the revo remap sorted it and now i cant get out of the thing. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

starry, what mapping set did you get from Revo?

Did you also get the plug which lets you select different settings, so that you can put it back to standard for when it goes in for a service?

Do Revo come out to you for fitting or do you have to go down to them?

i just had the remap and nothing else i didnt see the point in having 1 which would return to standard for a service because they cant tell any way. it is meant to be about 212bhp from a 150bhp engine but im putting it on the rollers in a couple of weeks and will let you no what happens, but it's a hell of a lot faster for sure ;D

Would be interesting what bhp it comes back with as then i'd probably be able to tell what my 180bhp golf would go up to if i had it revo'd.

Just got to save up for it now i've spent all my dosh on the car!

 ;D ;D

Thinking about the REVO option .  I have a stock 2000 1.8T GTi 150BHP.  Just wondering if you need to change anything else?  Such as brakes, exhaust, tyres  ???

I don't suppose you HAVE to change any of those really, unless you really want to upgrade them and can afford them.

I don't think chipping the ECU will turn it into an subaru imprezza, so wont need huge mods to the breaks and exhaust.

Thats just my opinion though, smoebody else should contribute who has upgraded some other bits.
