Just picked up an 06 06 GTi, 3dr, steel grey, 18" monza II's, leather, arm rest, 8 K miles.
Changed from an 06 06 Saab 9-3 cabriolet which was nice but to soft and build quality wasn't upto much, made even worse by the flex of the body shell, never had any problems though and covered 22K in 11 months. I didn't want to put any more money to a car as I run mine on an opt out company car scheme, did a striaght swap with a Mazda garage who had taken the GTi in part ex, they had a buyer for the Saab, so a stroke of look considering one garage wanted £3.5K to change!!.
I have to say and I am not just saying it to convince myself of the right choice but the GTi is every car you will ever need, I think its great.
Can anyone advise of the best place to get rubber fitted car mats from?

good choice with the new car.... i'm loving mine too
not sure on the matt issue... on the look out myself

Any VW dealer will supply a set of fitted rubber mats to you - I had a set in my previous GTi, and similar front mats in my current Edition 30. Can't remember the exact price, but I think the fronts are around £25-£30.

Yup, and they even secure with the standard floor twistlocks.

Thanks got the mats, around £25 for front inc VAT, just need a bottle opener centre console divider now, realised this is missing, seen one for £7 on ebay.
Service light came up today, 500 miles to go  phoned local VW garage and they advised that car isnt set up for variable servicing and that there is also a recall on the engine management to install?? know what this is. Calling in first thing Thursday to have sorted.

Go back to the stealer, and ask them to give you the bottle opener FOC, as it was standard spec when the car was new.

Your GTI really shouldn't be on the LongLife variable servicing anyway (unless you never go above 3,000rpm ). Saying that, even though it is on the shorter interval Time and Distance servicing, insist they only use the higher spec LongLife oil (pay extra for it, as it is better suited to the very high temps in the turbo bearings). One other point, if getting it serviced bang on the 500 miles is inconvenient, or they don't have a courtessy car, you are allowed a period of "grace", of upto 1,000 miles or one calender month beyond the date/mileage due - and it won't affect your warranty.
Regarding the recall, on any main stealer service, as a matter of routine, they will automatically update the engine management ECU (and any auto/DSG transmission ECU) with the latest available from VW Germany.

Why did VW put a bottle opener in the car ?
Most bottles that have a cap are alcoholic, so are they encouraging drinking in the car ?
Before anyone shoots me down i know Coke in real bottles have caps but its rare to find them
Anybody got a good reason for it

Because it's removable, so you can either have one large space, or when fitted, a bottle holder, plus it looks kinda cool, better than a sh!te piece of plastic I suppose.

I've never used the opener and I don't know anyone who has. Has anyone? :undecided:

I didn't really put my two bob's worth across very well, what I mean is rather than VW using a piece of plastic to act as a divider, they gave the Mk5 a little touch of detail, with the opener.

Yeah Creepy, I got you
I agree it is a nice touch, lets sit back and watch VW "economise" it out of existence

I read somewhere that our good friends across the Channel prefer their (soft) drinks in bottles rather than cans. So you've got the European Union to thank for the bottle opener. Probably...

Probably right.
They also get money back on empties too. They feed them back into these rather nifty machines which scan them, and they get 1euro for every 4 bottles. A good way for kids to top-up their pocket money (and get the bu&&ers away from the playstation).

I think it looks  and adds to the quality of the car. Never used it yet as a bottle opener, but use it all the time as the divider in the space for drinks.
-
i didn't get one!

Got the bottle opener, £7 ebay, spot on, good idea
Had the software sorted, cant tell any difference?? Dealership wash the car but put a slight scratch in the bonnet with a dirty sponge, spent 30mins with scratch X to get it out

who the hell's that hairy dude???

We also got the bottle opener/divider. Adds class.
