Title: sub and parcel shelf 6x9's...
Post by: e11ie on 03 June 2007, 14:04
after reading all the stuff on how u shouldnt have 6x9s in your parcel shelf if youve got a sub in your boot i came up with an idea and was just wondering if it would work......
replace the parcel shelf with 2 triangles of mdf in each corner (where the seats meat the parcel shelf supports) and put the 6x9s in there while leaving the rest of the "parcel shelf" area open so you can see right into the boot....or do subs work best when they are enclosed in the boot with a parcel shelf ontop?

nice question! its a bit of an open question though! everybody has their views on 6x9s and it totally depends what your looking for really. in my first car i had 4 x 6x9s in the parcel shelf and a single 10 inch sub in the boot and for punchy music like hardhouse, dance or live punk kind of music I found this near perfect. now though I just have decent front speakers and 2 x 12 subs.

The reason a lot of people slag down 6x9s is because with a decent sub in the boot and decent componant set or even coaxials in the front then the 6x9's in the back are easily drowned out by the other equiptment.

If you get some 6x9's second hand, or find some lying around somewhere! or dont want to change your front speakers they will be better than nothing but if your spending your hard earned you will be far better off doing the front speakers, unless you sit in the back of your car often of course, then 6x9's are the way to go!

my sub is a cheapy i got off the bay...eminence 350 single core or something n its only 10inch so i dont get anything amazingly earth shuddering from it and i was hoping to get another in the other side same size plus i have the parcel shelf support speakers going aswell! im not really looking to win any awards with the set up I just wondered if the triangle idea would make any difference or just shrug my shoulders n stick with the 6x9s in the parcel shelf!

The idea of having 2 triangles of mdf to mount your 6x9s on would not work, unless you intend to build sides as well to form a complete enclosure.  With any speakers, the air in front of the cone needs to be separated from the air behind the cone, otherwise most of the sound being produced will simply be cancelled out.

The problem with building enclosures for 6x9s is that they are designed to work with a large volume of air behind them, so an enclosure may suffocate them.

As Tom said, your money would be far better spent on a good set up in the front.  It then also looks standard from the outside, which has to be a bonus!

if you were dead set in love with 6 x 9's,  your best bet is to build or buy an 18 mm MDF shelf because standard ones sound bad because they are unstable and can be a pain to cut through ( some have metal running halfway through the shelf, some fords and pugs as far as ive seen) also if you dont ruin the standard shelf you can put it back in when you sell the car without having to leave your speakers in.

but at the end of the day its up to you. a decent set of componants will be very noticable compared to 6x9s installed anywhere in the rear of the car and you wont be paying too much extra for the large difference in sound quality.

the only thing to watch if you did decide to go with door speakers is the depth, as they can rub or catch on the window inside the door but that is easy to avoid.

See I like my 6x9's in the shelf!
In fact I like em so much I'm gonna swap em for the 7x10's out of my Pug!

7 x 10s are getting a bit more useful you will be getting close to 10 inch sub noise coming from them, have never heared of 7 x 10s though, heared of like 4 x 7's or something about that size, used to be in the old mk4 escorts. ive got some rectangle vibe 6 x 9s they are quiet good too, with the increase surface area being as they are rectangle. 6x9s are good for punch and kickdrums noises like i said, especially with a decent set of them, installed in wood and powered properly.

Mine are Kenwood 7x10's and they are currently in an enclosure above and below the parcel shelf in my Pug 405. I also have a 12" sub outing through the arm rest, pointing forward into the cabin in other words, so I cant really distinguish what is 7x10 or sub!
So I thought I would put the 7x10's in my Golf and see what its like.

so the sub box is made in the armrest enclosure bit?!

nah the sub box is in the boot, but has the speaker facing forward into the cabin through the arm rest apeture, which I made bigger and took out the plastic flap thing. So as soon as you drop the armrest you can see the speaker.

anybody sat in the back gets a good massage!

The sub is mounted on a 25mm thick ply which is bolted to the chassis divide between the boot and the cabin. Then the box is secured to that.

sounds nice! doesnt the sub hit the back of the seats, or have you given it enough clearance? or is it like a really big armrest?! or have i just got totally the wrong idea?! got any pics you can post?
probably be good to make a new post of it though, unless this one is dead now anyway?!

sorry if its not for hyjacking e11ie, have you decided which way you going to go about it yet?

No its set behind the metal frame of the car which is behind the rear seats.
The rim of the speaker is routered into the 25mm ply so it doesnt touch the metal.
Shouldnt really be talking about it on here as its in my peugeot let alone post pics!

Yeah apologies to e11ie - tell us waht you have decided.

should sound pretty mint then, and yeah, I was going to say the moderators will have you down for a satanist plugging french cars like that! I cant say much about worshiping the devil though as I still love my old, err :cough: renault! :cough: :cough:

they are pretty quick, all renaults and pugs are, so light though which is probably half the reason! I hated fixing it though, especially if i had to pay someone to do it! its like a big, very expensive jigsaw puzzle, pretty much write off the car if you blow a headlight bulb!

Haha no worries. It's gud to find out what different routes people have taken! I'm thinking I mite try n make an enclosure for them behind the rear seats if you reakon that would work.....but that will be yet another summer project so one day i mite get some pictures up!

what, behind the rear seats as in, in the boot? or like in line with where the parcel shelf would be screwed at the back at the top of the back seats? ( too many back's!)

I ask because if they are too covered or down deep in the boot you really wont hear them much in the car at all, open the boot and you will hear them stood outside, by the back of the car though!

yeah at the same level as the parcel shelf, just separate them from the boot area with an enclosure so that they dont use the same air as the sub (not very techy speak i know  :nerd: ) wouldnt be very big cos i still need a boot! If i can get my head round it I'll work the amp into it too...need to tidy that up n all!

that sounds like a plan! theloudest.co.uk do 6x9 boxes, if you didnt fancy making them, they sound real good, best sound ive ever heared from 6x9s., I installed some in a vito van recently.

cheers for the link  ...they look pretty smart but i think I'll make me own to properly fit the boot then.....their sizes will come in handy though when figuring out a suitable volume for it all
