righty people, finally had enough!
my dam car keeps buzzing like a good un every time a give it some booting... and once it starts, it keeps coming back on again and again and again til i let it cool down...
the oil light flashes and buzzes like mad, hwever, when i rev the engine over 2200 rpm it all goes quiet... a couple of times i've started the car and the oil light flashes and then eventually it starts buzzing... but only a couple of times, mostly it does it when i get bored of 30mph...
anyhoo, decided im going to investigate the oil pick up and give it a clean, also i've topped up oil but might give that a change...
any other suggestions?
thanks,
rob

Had the same thing on my last 8V. Turned out that the oil pick up was full of crap (ended up putting in a new pump) but there was also a minor blockage in the head.
Have you changed the sensors?
Before you drain the oil give it a good dose of engine flush, and drive the thing for a good while to let the flush do it's work. (certain brands allow for this).

got some flush from halfords and its just one u pour in and leave idleing at 2500 for 15 mins... how much am i looking for a new oil pump and also, which gaskets will i be needing?
rob
urgh, just thought, got a 2litre b/e on and i havent a clue what its off (was on there when i got the bugger), will this mean a diff oil pump and gasket? pretty sure the guy said it was off an audi...

Good question! Last time I flushed mine I drove it 50 miles to get all the crap out (not what the bottle suggested, but hey!).
Re the gaskets, have a look through the GSF or ECP listings for the various models and check the part number. Alternatively, a PM to Rubjonny may sort you out- he is the king of all that is part numbers! The oil pump is not a hassle to change when you get the sump off, but depends on the state of the pick up as to whether you will have to do it. My old one was full of melted plastic off the dipstick guide...... Nice!!
-
sweet, been looking at the ecp and gsf things and done a search on here about the gaskets, seems vag ones are my best bet... thin i'll stick with them, just the worrying question as to whether or not i need to find what car the bottom end came off.. and if i need a diffo oil pump etc...
thanks

Def go for VAG ones! Suspect that they will all be the same, but worth checking.

i'll pm old rubjonny, sure he'll enlighten me  clever git:D
cheers mart
nice car btw

Thanks! Clicked onto 160,000 on my way to work this morning, and still pulling well.
Back end needs some attention, tho. Not happy with the "saggy arse" look.....

hahahaha, been to local dealership and asked a few prices...
80 odd quid for a oil pump exc vat :undecided: wounded!!
anyhoo, i also asked about the pressure switches and he was like, which ones do you want and listed a pile of em...
so i nodded and walked out, which ones do i want to replace, bearing in mind i have a 1991 digifant...
cheers, rob

There are two. One on the top of the oil filter housing (nearest the block) and one on the right hand side of the head. Both can be bought from GSF / ECP and easily replaced.
As for the pump, bought mine from GSF for about £30- give them a ring and ask which one you need for a 2litre B.E.
-
swwet, i'll give them a buzz tomorrow, 80quid is a bit steep for me hehe
cheers mart

No probs. Good luck!

is there a relay that controls the pressure switches, just had a look at all my relays and consulted the haynes manual.... my fuse board dont look like the diagram
anyways, decided i'd check if it was the relay, unplugged both pressure switches and drove home from work, with the buzzer and light coming on after perhaps 5 mins and staying on, is this normal, or does it suggest a faulty relay?
just got a speeding fine too  god damn police, why cant they catch real criminals!!!
anyhoo,
thanks rob

If you unplug the switches then the buzzer will come on when the engine is running. Other potential is that the cicuit on the back of your speedo has been damaged. Has it been taken out recently?
-
not that im aware of, think its never been toched tbh... only other things other than the pump, which i've been assured by both the geezer i bought it from and the garage i use, wont be broken, is that the 2ltre b/e needs more oil in than what the dip stick shows...
-
If that is the case I think that with a couple of new sensors and a bloody good flush and refill you should sort the problem.
Happy motoring!

righty, dropped the sump, the pick-up was sparkling clean, not a spec of sh*t anywhere, hardly any deposits, and i was very chuffed with it all in all, didnt have time to change the pump, so put the sump back on and changed the oil filter, both sensors and started her up... all seemed ok.
then bout 2 metres from my house, i put her in idle and the oil light started 'flickering', but not flashing intermitently, like it should...
so i topped oil up cos of filter and thought no more. revved her a couple o times, then held her arund 3,500rpm and buzzzzzzzzzzz...and it wouldnt go off, so turned her off and cursed her. walked away sneezing and genrally feeling poo.
could i have done a very stupid thing and not changed the oil-pump, which i should have, or does the idle flickering suggest a buggred relay or circuit board?

If there was no crap in the pick up I would suspect it is not that. Getting towards the end of my knowledge on this, but electrics sound like the most likely area, but if speedo has not been out lately and the problem has not been going on that long then you should be OK in that area.
Drop a thread into the "Garage" board and see what comes back....
Sorry I can't really help any more! Mine was sorted by this stage (not that that is any comfort to you!).
-
thanks for your help, very much apreciated
i'll drop a thread into the garage bit and see...
cheers,

You are doing all the trouble shooting wrong.
I had this problem and it would have saved me a lot of money if i had done 1 simple thing. and that is to get an oil pressure check carried out to see if the car is making enough pressure. the buzzer and light come on because the oil pressure is dropping below a certain figure. i think mine was something like 1.2bar. this was the pump so that was replaced.
but if your pressure is ok then it can be the wire that runs from the pressure switch to the dash buzzer.
in come case the buzzer can be the problem.
try this and see what happens.
-
yeah, i think an oil pressure test maybe best way of going about it.
just changed to coolant system and refilled it and all was well and dandy, except the oil pressure thing has started buzzing again...might just have the test done then i know where i stand i guess.
cheers:p
