Title: Mk3 8v gearbox on Mk2 8v? Does it go?
Post by: benross on 01 June 2007, 09:37
Hi all,

I dont know if you've seen my other post about my gearbox / syncramesh probs but I may have a solution.

If its not so easy to fix I have a spare gearbox from a mk3 8v gti. It came with an engine I bought for the bottom end for one of my other mk2s. Would this gearbox (which is rod not cable) fit on a 1989 mk2 8v without having to buy any other bits?

Help appreciated- maybe rubjonny might know- he seems a whizz anything mk2.

Cheers

no its not a direct fit, you wopuld need a 16v clutch friction disc as the input shaft is bigger.  The ratios 2-5 are taller as well, might not be a good match for the lower torque on the 1.8 8v!

As it might not even need a new box.
