Hi,
I have just about killed my 8v gti engine (pb,digi) and have got a new 2e engine ready to go in. Not having removed an engine from a Golf (done a few other cars before, mainly Vauxhalls) I am just on the look out for any potential gotchas not covered in the Haynes manual. I am hoping to leave the gearbox in place if I can. Just want it to be as quick and easy as possible. Can anyone give me any tips before I start ripping out the old?
Cheers
Matt

if you want it quick and easy leave the gearbox in place, take off the grill, slam panel and cross member and then you have easy acess tyo pull it all out from the front.

leaving the gearbox in will make it quite tricky, there isnt much room to move the engine about at the best of times! Get a spline tool from halfords and pop off the driveshafts, will only take about 30minutes more :)
Just clean out the bolt heads and make sure the spline tool is all the way in!

Cheers for the info guys. I thought it would be quite easy anyway, VWs usually are , I just wanted to make sure.

yeah what he said jack the engine up and leave the gearbox where it is then just roll the car backwards when its all free and your left with engine sittin on jack. i did mine that way can be a paint in arse to line up the clutch but other than that its a doddle
