Title: Buzzing noise (Oil)
Post by: Miacant on 11 February 2004, 09:19
25mins into my journey this morning to work on the Motorway, I hear a buzzer sound and oil warning light  comes on for a few secs. then goes off. It comes on and off like every five minutes. I quickly flicked thru MFA and 88 was temp reading which I believe is normal.

I have checked oil level and is just slightly above normal.  Another problem is my tappet noise won't die off now when engine is warm.

Please advise what the problem might be.
Car is driving me bonkers. :(

Thanks.

Probably dodgy oil pressure switch, i would get the oil pressure checked as well as changing the switch.
Have you done an oil change recently? try flusher as well, if that doesn't quieten the tappets then you will probably need a new set.

Thanks, golfvr6. I've booked the car in this saturday for a job so I shall ask garage to do the pressure test.

Oil was changed just days before I bought the car 5 months ago. I do just over a thousand miles each month. Would you advise I change the oil? And how much will a new set of tappets cost? Been quoted different prices in the past.

I would change the oil again and use flusher. Use quantum silver or gold, and a genuine vw oil filter.
See what the tappets are like after you have done the oil change.

Almost 5 weeks now since I change engine oil. I used valvoline maxlife and since then buzzer noise and oil light stopped.

Just this week I'm experience the problem all over again.
4 times, noise & light comes on and off  for a few secs during the first 10-20mins of my journey to and from work.

I have checked oil level and its just fine. Please help.
Thanks.

Hi Miacant, there are two oil pressure switches on the engine and if either of the switches goes faulty it should operate the buzzer. If you have checked the oil pressure with a guage and it is within specs, go for the switches. One of the switches is normaly open contacts and the other is normally closed. To test these I use 2 test lamps, one end of each connected to battery positive and the other end of the test lamp to each switch, then with engine stood one lamp should be lit, and when you start the engine it should go out and the other should light. Watch for either of them flickering or not changing over. If you do replace the switches, make sure that you put the correct switch in the correct location. I have also seen some cars with the strainer on the oil pick up pipe blocked, this causes the oil pressure to drop as the engine revs are increased, drop the sump off and clean out.
Steve.

Mk1 & stevegti, thanks for your input.
I have booked the car in for oil pressure check 2moro.
Mechanic thinks it might be low pressure or blockage in strainer, or could be the oil pump. Hope it isn't the pump.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers.

If you change your oil pressure switches make sure they're genuine VW. I bought pattern parts and the oil kept blowing through the one on top of the oil cooler.  :-\

Change the switches first. If the fault is still there, have the oil pressure checked.

Reason for the buzzer noise, in my case, is to do with the oil pressure which isn't right according to the mechanic. Oil pressure switch has been replaced and as result oil light and buzzing noise has stopped. I'm a happy bunny and glad it isn't the pump.

Cheers, guys.
