Is it worth me taking an old car to a dealership or is it a garanteed fail and an empty wallet
what do they charge for an MOT?
-
I wouldnt have thought it would be worth it! You know what are they like with servicing etc... They'll do stupid things like "top up" all your fluids and then charge obscene amounts for them! This is what happened to my friend, what a load of sh*t, i had topped up the fluids and checked tyre pressures and everything, so knoew they were talking wan*k... unfortunately i didnt know until after she had paid...
Folks also took the passat to the dealers for a basic routine service, and they couldnt even work out what the correct spark plugs were, and the car just didnt run right afterwards, yet they didnt know why!! Same with MK4, the amount of co*k ups they made with it...
put it this way, from personal experiences, and from what i have heard everyone say (never heard a good word about a dealer, except the last time mine was there, in 1989) i would NEVER take my car there!!
-
Saying that though.... If they did fail it for no reason... it is illegal to fail a road legal car, but i reckon, as said, they would charge over the odds to "put right" things that dont need it... wiper blades etc, probably without asking you either, so you have to pay for the services they provided!

My dealers did mine in Jan, Straight through no probs. It was cheaper than anywhere else in Newport and I got a courtesy car
-
All depends on the price, i would to be honest, doesnt really matter where you take it. Besides, on a safety note you want it doing properly anyway!

Got mined MOT'ed last week for £20 with a voucher in the local paper. Not a stealer mind you. Passed.
That's that done for another year :D

Only if I knew someone that worked there, so I wouldnt get done over on wiper blades and stupid things like that. I hactually normally get stuff done at the Skoda dealership here, but they don't do MOT's, so I use a little garage that my dad has used for years - they'd rather put things right like bulbs etc, than fail it on them and make you bring it back. £40

if you have it done at a dealer thay will charge for a mot plus a hours labour
kwik fit ect just charge for the test

Wouldn't take it to a dealer once a car is out of warranty. So that would be any VW over 4 years old. Go to your nearest reputable independant MOT station
