Title: leak from dizzy..
Post by: rowlers on 28 May 2007, 13:29
Been aving a good luck and it looks like the oil leak is coming from where the dizzy bolts to the head. There is no oil at all in the dizzy cap.

Is there a o ring in between the head or where the dizzy joins on the cam?

Or will a bit of silicone sealent on the mating faces sort it?

there is a big O-Ring that seals the dizzy into the head. whether u can buy a new one on its own i dunno

is that the one that you have to strip the dizzy to fit?
I've had a look on etka but can't find anything, I seem to recall some O rings left over from my HG set

Lee I had the exact same problrm with my dizzy leaking oil and I fitted a new seal which i too had left over from the H/G set but still pi##ed oil out so i got a small amount of sealent around the seal now seems to have sorted it 4 now  :smug:
The seals are not available from GSF but they are from VW at about £7 each  :undecided:

no its the outer seal on the dizzy

if it was leaking oil into the dizzy cap then its a strip down job to replace the inner seal

You can get a dizzy from a stealer for about 100 quid on exchange for your old one, if you've had an oiley one for sometime you should notice a small increase in performance for fitting a new (or re-furbed) unit
or check ebay as they is a chap that sells new ones on there! they normally go for about £70.

you can get a new seal from VW, wont cost a lot.  The later ones have an o-ring round the base where it fits inside the block and early ones just have a gasket around the mounting face.

whipped it off today..

there is what looks like an indent? where an Oring is meant to be.
Lots oil oil dropped out when I pulled it off (ohh err missus).

I have gone through etka but I can'y find an o-ring seal for this??

What year/car is it?  I've seen on an old one it had a similar groove as the newer dizzy, but you couldnt get a seal into the old one as it had a ridge, it had a gasket round the top instead.

The o'ring is listed under electrical -> ignition distributor
1st you look under 'distributor versions' and figure out what number yours is, then look under ign distributor and check the o'ring or seal, and look at what seal part # is listed for your dizzy number :)

For example:
026 905 261 is listed for a Digifant 8v dizzy :)

sorry - not oil inside the actual dizzy, oil comes out when you remove the dizzy from round the outside of it - the oil seal inside the dizzy must be doing its job - nothing is in the cap.

late update...

Had the dizzy off and there is still oil pi$$ing out. NO OIL in the cap though.

Its not the rocker either so how is this oil getting out???

I'll take some pics and show you - amy be you can come up with some ideas!!!

You could have a small crack in the head or the leak could be coming from the stud that the dizzy is mounted to. (If that is how it is mounted) Remove the stud and see if the other end protrudes into the head itself. If it does, degrease the whole lot and refit stud with stud lock or thread sealant.
Bear in mind I do not yet know the 16V, so I could be talking out of my @rse!!!

the dizzy mounts direct to head and bolts on - no studs.

The oil is coming past the end of the camshaft and leaking through the mounting surface of the head and dizzy. The O ring should seal it but it doesn't for some reason?

just had a thought...
could the rocker cover gasket leak into the bottom of the dizzy? Where it seals around the cam?

I think I'll av to take the cover off - more work!
