Title: Oil Temp very high on Digi mk 2
Post by: Alfie Moon on 27 May 2007, 14:31
Having issues with Oil / Water temp.  Have had head re-built, new readiator, water pump, oil cooler and Oil filter, Samco hoses, New Oil temp sender from the block (Not from Oil Cooler), New Thermostat, expansion tank and Blue cap.  Car used to run at about 94 on a dialy run upto about 98 - 102 on the motorway.  Since changing the Heater Matrix (Not touching the OIL or WATER temp senders) Oil temp now goes up to 106 - 110 on a daily drive to work (15 miles), and anything upto 118 - 120 when giving it some.  Yesterday she pressured up, water was boiling through expansion tank, water seemed to not be recycling through the radiator (Thermo Sticking?) and Oil temp went up to 128, this is when i stopped.  Car currently sat in my Garage, any ideas?

sounds like an air lock, thermostat stuck shut or need another8 expansion tank cap........... :undecided:

Does the bottom pipe to the radiator get warm? Allow the car to run from cold until it has warmed up and the cooling fan kicked in.  If does not get very warm once the car is fully up to temp not then it maybe an air lock or thermostat.

To shift an air lock, run the car at idle from cold, massaging the coolant pipes, with the expansion tank cap off until the car is fully warmed up and the cooling fan has kicked in.  Then increase the revs to 2500 for 20 secs and switch off.  Water will boil over out the expansion tank.  Top up (when safe) and replace cap.

Check to see if the bottom pipe now warms up at temperature.

The bottom rad hose going to the water pump gets warm no where near as hot as the rest of the pipes.  Could be an air lock will flush the system out later.  Would be dissapointed if it was the thermo again as it is only about 4 weeks old. Thanks bro.

Yeh it does sound like an air lock.

btw, you can usually feal when the thermostat pings becasue the bottom radiator hose goes from cool to very warm suddenly as the car gets up to temp.

Alternatively, perhaps the new thermostat does not open fully.  You could always put one in a pan of boiling water before ftting to makes sure it will open.
