i have a 1.6 driver and i have heard and believe it to be possible that the 8v gti head can go on to my block if i block the injector holes. what other work is needed?i will prob upgrade to the weber carb as well. Since runnnig the gti head, does this mean that i can use the gti exhaust system as well?would the inlet manifold for the 1.6 be suitable for the head as well?cheers.

your better off just getting the GTI cam and exhaust manifold & mating it to your existing head.
the heads themselves arent any better, its the cam & manifold that makes the difference

You will need to drill a coolant channel into the head. Not hard apparently, but i've only read about it and not actually done it!
Also, as far as i'm aware the valves on a gti head are bigger than a driver so definitely worth it if your going for the weber, gti cam and gti manifold/exhaust.

Yep mew you're right, the GTI heads have bigger ports :)
Drilling the hole is indeed easy, simply match the angle of the hole in the old head and drill with a small bit, then increse the size of the drill bits till it ends up the same diameter as the old one. You'll feel the drill pop into the coolant chanel.
As for the injector holes you can:
1. Leave the injectors in
2. Unscrew the inserts, drop a coin down the hole then screw em back in
3. Apparently gearbox drain plugs are the right thread
