Title: Recommend me a pair of replacement door speakers
Post by: mattupnorth on 25 May 2007, 13:06
Recently bought a 5dr Mk3 GTI Anniversary and one of the front door speakers is silent, I'm assuming its dead as the dash speakers works ok. Will try and have a look to check wiring, but assume its blown.

My questions is, can you guys recommend me a half decent pair of speakers to replace the standard ones? that'll fit as straight swaps or without too much hassle. Not looking for anything too fancy, just something slightly better than the originals!

Ideas appreciated.

If you only wish to replace the blown midrange speaker in the door, you're better off just getting an original VW speaker.

The infinity's linked to above are fine speakers, but you'd need to fit the tweeters and crossovers as well, then ideally amp them to get the best from them.

Car audio is a slippery slope....

to really see any benefit on uprated speakers, they need a decent enclosure, the OE positions are gash and dont encourage good sound at all, whereas if you get hold of some door pods (or make your own), you will see an undescribable difference.

front speakers work best in a sealed enclosure, not the infinite baffle/free air rubbish that manufacturers set them up in. even using standard speakers, i bet my life on it, the best sound change you will make is putting the speakers in a decent enclousre, then go about replacing them.

Thats why mk4s sound so good with a good head unit, good quality OE speakers in a sealed enclosure attached to metal.

The main problem with standard locations (Mk2) is not so much the aiming, but the rigidity of the mounting - which is probably the most important aspect of speaker fitting.  Even with aftermarket pods, they are  still mounted to a pretty flimsy doorcard.

Also, I disagree about the enclosure - manufacturers build speakers with a large volume enclosure (eg a door) in mind, therefore a small volume enclosure is more likely to produce a peaky response, and require more power to get the cone moving - you're creating artificial suspension.  As soon as I opened up my doorcards behind the speakers, there was an immediate increase in midbass.

Speaker mounts screwed directly to the metalwork is definitely the way forward, but that means even more work!

but the trouble with the door is that its a big metal box, its awful for using for an enclosure, not to mention all the rattly bits inside. doorpods are much more sensible.

I don't disagree with that - provided the limited size of the pod/enclosure doesn't stifle the movement of the cone.  It also means that the speaker would be kept in a dry environment, which  is another bonus.

A good covering of even cheap sound deadening does improve the door as an enclosure no end.

Dynamat on the inside of the outer door skin. There should be no rattly bits inside a door if there is something needs fixing!

Then get some Infinity Kappas!
