Title: DSG flappy paddles
Post by: Stiggy on 24 May 2007, 15:21
Appologies in advance if someone has asked this before, but how often do dsg owners use their flappy paddles in normal driving around town?  Dare i say this, but i have found that i am doing about 15-20 miles more in a tank using the flappy paddles rather than the full automatic mode, thats even with a wee bit of heavy footedness every now and again!  Just find it the best of both worlds - can control when i want to change the gears.  Maybe i'm being abit paranoid here, but is it ok to use the paddles for the long run, wrt gearbox wear and tear?  I know economy is the last thing on everyones mind here, but with the vpower stuff being dished out at £1.01/Ltr, think i need to be a bit more balanced in my driving style !!

Have recently discovered the car runs alot longer on the same amount of fuel using paddles in manual mode. As it doesnt jump into 6th gear as soon as the car gets to 30mph, which makes the engine labour and overload and why she seems to be more thirsty.

I love the paddles

The more I've used them, the more natural they've become. At first it seemed a bit odd trying to remember that they move with the wheel but I'm used to it now.

I agree with Phil that it's a pain that the auto mode shoves you into 6th whenever it sees the needle poke its head above 30mph.

I haven't noticed any difference in the fuel consumption, mainly cos I never look at it, as it just makes me think about the 50mpg I used to get with my MKV GTTDI

The power makes up for it though

Thanks for the replies guys - totally agree with you all.  The gears do tend to change too early in "D" mode, especially while cornering, where i'd like to make all the necessary gear changes before the corner and not during it.  It has taken some getting used to, but now i prefer using the paddles than let the car do everything.

I can totally relate to you there !!!

Just remember 2007gti, to push the gear lever away from you when u wanna go fowards!!!, and turn down the radio!! then  u wont forget, if you have a highline computer, but it on current econamy setting, and also turn off aircon, and see the difference. add at least 3-4 to the miles to a gallon. EVERY LITTLE HELPS!

Cane it . .

Cane it in auto for a few days, and the shift pattern will adapt, and start to change up much higher up the rev range.  When I leave it in auto around town, at 30 mph, it is usually in 3rd or 4th.  However, when SWMBO has had the car for the week, it goes back to its' old tricks of changing into 6th at 31mph

I've done nearly 33,000 with DSG and for the first 1,000 only used D, then D and S until about 30k miles. Having done a Drivetrain driving course, I now use paddles most of the time and only D when in crawling traffic. I don't like the soft feel of the floor stick and find the paddles much more instant and direct. I wish they were much bigger and extended both above and below - It can be tricky entering a roundabout in 1st and needing 2nd while on nearly full lock - Perhaps I should pop into S for that but she's very eager particularly as remapped.

Found the same thing as RedRobin, on full lock going 1st to 2nd, it soon becomes natural at this point , banging the lever forwards, drops into 2nd, and by that time the wheel is back to paddle changing reach.........unless you are going round and round for fun

Can I ask who/where your course was with?

I now use paddles most of the time and only D when in crawling traffic.

Me too, though I leave it in D until it reaches normal operating temperature, because the ECU controlled shift pattern is slightly different, to help for the shortest warm-up period.

I wish they were much bigger and extended both above and below

Then perhaps you might like this mod, of using the larger paddles from the TT 3.2, though they arn't illuminated like the Golf ones - linky: http://www.tt-forum.co.uk/ttforumbbs/viewtopic.php?t=8662&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

That is probably the only time I use the floor shift lever.

Yes, i'd also like to know where you did your course RedRobin  - been looking for something like this myself.  I've tried using the gear knob to shift up and down while in manual mode but don't like it at all.  Think it will take some getting used to.  Its a shame that there's no kickdown when in fully manual mode (or so it seems).

....No, those TT paddles won't fit the UK Mk5 GTI and neither will the European Mk4 GTI DSG paddles fit. Both the TTshop and AwesomeGTI have tried to help me with this.

Re Drivetrain course, I'll start a new thread shortly.

There certainly IS a kickdown in full manual mode!

Are you sure you are pressing the loud pedal hard enough - there is an extra bit of resistance, as you overcome the floor mounted kickdown switch.  :nerd:

Oh, OK.

I suppose a cut down fairy liquid bottle, two old egg boxes, and a roll of sticky-back plastic tape won't help either!

Ah yes!  Seems like my right foot wasn't heavy enough!  Shows my lack of experience in automatic cars eh.  Cheers for that TT - its made my day

And please get rid of that thing on your sig - might throw up all over the keyboard/computer so i'll never be able to get on to this wonderful forum!

My SWMBO also needed "educating" on this very issue - she blamed the high heels - is that your excuse too, Stiggy??

Some knife throwers have already forced the hand (keyboard) of an Admin on that issue!
