Title: Taking rub strips off?

Hey all,

I'm thinking of taking off the rub strips off my 87 3dr 16v, anyone any ideas whether it is clipped on or glued on? I'm sitting in work thinking about it so cant get too the car.  :laugh:
Also, will it look stupid taking the strips off and leaving the arches on as they have the bit which lines up to the rub strips?
Has anyone done it and had good results?

they are clipped in so you'll have holes along the side of your car if you remove them

As above, taking mine off when I get car resprayed in a couple of years I think  :smiley:

if your car has the deep sidestrips finding a narrow set is quite effective

They are glued on earlier models, mine was a 1987 16v and they were glued on. Take your door cards off and if there are no clips popping through then rip em off. Getting the glue off is a pain in the arse though.

is there any sort of cleaning solution that can take the glue off, it mine are glued on, withouth killing the paintwork?
Or is it down to the technique of taking it off. I learnt the hard way many years ago when doing a similar job on my old XR2  :embarassed: shameful i know, and took off loads of the paint

No going back now, my VW collection is growing and growing, at the last count '87 16v GTi, 1980 Camper and 1990 Driver (collecting dust in the garage)  :smiley:

if they are glued on then run a hairdryer or heat lamp along the length of them to soften the glue, then get a piece of fishing line and pull it through behind the trims.

left over glue can be removed with tar remover or petrol

also, if u take them off u will still have the holes there?!?

Mine didnt have holes there when i removed them! :smug:

Did it look good when u took them off?
Did you leave the arches on as well?
I'm having a good mess with the car today so will see what i find

I've taken my arches off at the moment and I quite like the look of it need to decide about the side strips and what to do it looks a bit rat look with the holes where the arch clipped on :laugh:
