Okey dokey......as well as my GTI, I also own this beasty, trouble is its only a 1.3 driver, I really want some more power, so Ive been considering doing a 16v conversion, has anyone, done this before?Does anyone have any thoughts on this

Well its possible, but quite a lot of work is involved. The smaller engines i.e 1.1 and 1.3 are mounted in the engine bay at a different angle to the larger engines i.e 1.8 and 16V. Consequently the left hand engine mount (as you look at the engine bay) is in a different place..........I had a donor car and cut the bracket out of the chassis on that and welded it into the correct position on the project car.
Gearbox, gear linkage, drive shafts, wiring loom, exhaust even the radiator will all be different and also you'll need to install the electric fuel pump, accumulator etc.
I would, at the very least, consider buying a donor mk1 GTI for parts.

Hmm....well I have been offered a complete valver ;D, but was told I would need the box and wiring loom from a corrado ???

bout me and my gti wud that be easy(er) to fit a 16v?
was lookin at a g60 lump but not sure :-\
-
Easier if you already have a GTI as you already have the fuel injection components fitted (fuel pump, accumulator), loom will need a lot less (if any) modifying, gearbox is physically the same so driveshafts and linkage shouldn't be a problem and the engine mounts will be ok.
G60 lump won't be too much of a problem either.......certainly much easier to convert a 1.8 8v GTI to 16V or G60 than trying to convert a 1.3 driver to the same...........but thats not to say it can't be done.......and I'm sure it has been 8)

It will be lots of work as said as you need all those bits, is it worth just going out and buying a Gti with a view to 16v power?
-
lol Steve if I had the money I would, but as Im being given the car and all the work is being done for free (eventually ::)) what would you do ??? ;D
-
i have a mk 1.6 gti exactly how much work is it to fit a mk2 1.8 16v engine?
And has anyone got an engine for sale ?
-
I think it is a fair amount of work to be honest. I will send you a email with a document i have.

Is it at all possible do forward a copy of 16v conversion to me please? I am considering undertaking same conversion with my 1.8 mk1. :) :) :) :)

I have fitted a 16v in my mk1, use the 8v gear box, 16v clutch pressure plate with 8v disc, use all the 8v engine mounts, engine fits in no probs. Fit the 16v air flow meter to the top 8v air filter case, hook up thr fuel supply and return, use the 8v injector pipes (I had to make up adapters as the injectors had a different thread) the 16v inlet manifold puts the throttle body on the o/s, so you will have to make up inlet pipework from the manifold to the metering unit. Or, fit the 16v metering unit to the o/s, use the 16v injector pipes and re-plumb the fuel supply and return to match. On my car, the dist cap and leads hit the brake fluid resovoir, so I fitted a remote fluid tank. There is a way 'around this by fitting a cap with angled plug ends to clear the fluid tank. I cant comment on the exhaust side as I went a different route ;). Have heard that Scirocco 16v parts are the way to go ???. 8v starter works ok.
The rest is a few wires and a bit of plumbing, there is other things that I cant think of just now.
Steve.

Many thanks for that steve, big help. Would you consider this being a worthwhile conversion for a little used vehicle that will probably only pootle around town most of its life. I know this is not a good comparison but when i tried mk3 16valvers against my mk3 8v, my car pissed on them as standard. :-\ :-\

If you want a interesting quick car, this in my opp is the way to go. All VW parts and what VW would have done if the parts were around ;)

Fair point. I'm just trying to rationalize the expense & time required. I only have ?500 spare at the mo, so maybe working with the 8v is the way to go. I dont plan on selling it at any point so I can look at engine swaps later (build one on the bench to a nice spec). Sorry to keep on with a stream of questions, but do you feel there is any merit in installing a hydraulic cab/skyrocket head? I suppose a smooth driveable engine with a bit of noise is my goal (I can burn up all the nova boys around this way with my grans 1.4 fraud onion!)
