i know this isn't answering your question but, my valver's gearbox has just died and wondered where you got your replacement and how much did it cost? sorry for the hijack!

You can get an alignment tool for this job. They used to be sold on ebay a while back as that's where I got mine from. If you can't find them I'm sure someone local to you will have one you can borrow.

Getting a tool is no issue - I just have no clue what you do with it!!! Sure i know it sets the gear lever in position but what other adjustments should be made whilst it's fixed in place??

Sorry to be lame, I've just no experience in this area!!

I'm sure rubjonny will come along with the correct answer but.....

afaik it's a matter of fitting the alignment tool, then undoing the pinch bolt on the end of the rod coming from the gear lever..

there's a marking on it where it should be to have it all lined up properly so you can adjust it to that and tighten the bolt back up again. Obviously if this doesn't work and you didn't have the linkage replaced when the box was fitted it may be a case of replacing all of that to get it working properly again.

You don't really need a tool, trial and error works fine - as long as you can get into all gears there's nothing else to it. You need a friend though
