Title: Rusty jacking points
Post by: dadrathers on 21 May 2007, 21:25
Just forward of the front jacking point on the cills of my Mk II, there are two reinforced 'blobs' on the floor pan that are supposed to be used for trolley jacks and garage lifts. The one on the near side has rusted so badly around the 'blob' that it has torn away and pushed upwards. No good for jacking now!!

Has anybody else had this problem? - I am not aware that it is a common rust area on Mk II's. Any suggestions on what to do about it? Has it rusted from insde or outside? - I am planning to take it into the garage to have it welded up. It is about the only bit of serious rust on the car so need to get it sorted. Thanks.

Yep!
Mine went on the O/S. Had to have it cut out and replaced for the MOT.

yeah it is pretty common, tom26's did that and mine were a bit crusty in the same area but it was caught in time.

Thanks guys - it is somewhat reassuring not to be alone !!

Any idea whether it is rusting from inside out or outside in?

Nice car 8vRicey - mine's a black 5 door but with steel wheels (as yet) - your BBS look absolutely tops.

yeah mine was a pain. Found a nice chap to cut out the rust and weld in a plate!
I always apply fresh underseal on the jacking points now after every use, just in case i scratch/crack the old stuff.
don't want a repeat of last time!

Thanks for all the replies. Had it welded up last week - they did a neat job - 100 squid +VAT.

Given the area a good coat of waxoyl and will top it up regularly.
