Title: Fifth Gear show
Post by: Phil mcavity on 21 May 2007, 21:01
Did anyone see the program tonight, hot hatch review, nice to see the GTi come in 1st place!! beating the Focus ST just!!!  round the track by just 1 and a half seconds!!.  Tiff niddell behind the wheel giving both cars serious stick. I thought it was ment to be alot quicker then the standard Gti as that was already faster the the Focus sanitary towel. Doesnt say much for track manners of the Edition 30  comparing the older GTi model

I'm ashamed to admit that I actually took a test drive in one :embarassed:

The good news is that I thought it was overweight, comparatively slow and cheap and tacky internally

There's no continuity with 5th Gear, one minute the Golf's "car of the year", then it's for "old people", "bunch of bellend's" the lot of em.

Yup, Tiff is a big headded, self centred arse. (And I bet VBH sucks it long time too, all the creeping she does)

All reviews are subjective, and tiff cant relate to other people. AND the "tartan" cloth is a tribute to the original VW GTI, I would have thought he (or one of the trained mobkeys) would have known that.

The ST is a decent enough car, but when I had a drive it just seemd to be all bout the engine. When I drove the golf itws so much more balanced. (Also, I dont expect the Chav chumps gettin there hands on a GTI for a while, where as the ST will be in their price range any day now - You will hear them in halford asking where the Burberry paint is)

That turned into a bit of a rant, so in summery: Tiff = Arse. Golf STILL rules.

'Oh and the Ed. 30 has 20BHP more than the standard GTI' - Do these so called experts that are paid to be on TV not do their homework??????

Leather seats on ED. 30? Where?????? Next they will be telling me that i could have had the half leather Recaros with tartan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tiff may be a tosser - but he is a likable tosser (lets face it who doesn't like a good toss aged 16!) and his driving is very watchable!

you beat me to the missing 10bhp...

If Tiff shuts up, he's great to watch. Never forget his accident with Mansel, just shows what an idiot he is

Fifth Gear dudes (including that Vicky-look-my-mum-drives-lambo chick with the most annoying laugh) are race drivers. Jason Plato is my favourite.
But Ed30 beinga car for old people?   Tiff must have had a bad day or something...

5th Gear is pants though isn't it. I do watch it, it has cars in it, but that's the only reason. Top Gear may do pointless tests and interviews but it WORKS and is great to watch for everyone!!

I enjoy Clarkson. His reports are hilarious at times. And the pointless tests... well, we all know that Lambo 640 is fast, and F430 is fast, and whatnot is fast.. but it is fun to watch a race between GTI and Lambo 640, it's good entertainment!  Love Top Gear.

Yeah, top gear can be pointless BUT entertaining (example: trying to kill a hilux). 5th gear can be pointless FULL STOP (Reverse around a track untill it overheats - yawn)

...And dont get me started on VROOM VROOM!!!

don't think you can really compare an RS to an ST mate. i'd rather have a new rally-derived focus than a new golf gti given the choice

Sharpie, since when did a Focus RS be part of this topic??????? wasnt it the ST they were testing   , The focus RS talk steers like a pig doesnt it turn left when it accelerates?? same problem as the Vauxhall VXR   :smug:, and cant handle its power as well as any mk 5 GTi or Edition 30, so , think your alone on thinking its a better car

Ha Ha

Guys we had the same argument here in South Africa with car magazine. Now many people know that Car magazine are very much biased towards anything with a Ford Emblem on it. They did a grand test a year or so back and guess who won... The Ford Focus ST. The fascinating thing is that i had to do a life skills project on a news report and look at it in fine detail and write about things like bias etc in the report.

Some things i picked up on.
1. On the front cover of the magazine. The golf is always behind the Ford.
2. In every picture, be it side on, straight on you name it... The Ford is in front. ALWAYS.
3. Six out of eight comments on the GTI were positive. Everything from its interior to rims.
4. Four out of eight comments on the Ford were negative. This including "TACKY" ST badges, "HARD" ride and of course that it does corner like a 1945 pickup truck....

So yes. ST vs GTI. Its old news.
Now let me give my opinion......

I will admit. We test drove the Ford and yes there are many reasons for it not being parked in our garage.
Firstly.... Its a Ford. That should be enough to scare you away. (Ok not being horrible we do have a Ford Fiesta ST which is stunning).
Then there is the engines. Ok fine. ST pushes a slight bit more than the GTI. But all you have in the Ford is a overtuned engine, turbolag and a very finnesse engine note. (Much like a dog growling)
The GTI has its own powerplant and is tuned to perfection. Practically no turbolag!! And the meanest growl ever. (Though the R32 is in a different league)
The interiors. Like tin and gold. The GTI has the most ergonomic interior around. The quality is exceptional and besides the odd rattle its sturdy and strong. Climb into the Ford and you have a plastic feel with rattles and squeeks. (Now I' am not saying this applies to all Fords)

Then we go back to the historical point of view......
The Golf GTI has been in production for 30 years now. Its been known as the king of all hot hatches (Ok they screwed up on the golf 4, no offense meant which was a let down but look at the MK5!)
The Ford Focus has been in production for less than hald that time. Has never won car of the year which the GTI did in 2005 I think it was and honestly. ST vs GTI? The GTI has had 30 years to be continuesly improved. The Ford Focus ST is just there to contend.

This brings me to my final point. Please dont think I'm bragging. We paid around R280 000 for our GTI full house bar Satnav. (My mom will never use it). The reason we brought the GTi and not the ST is because who in South Africa can afford to spend almost R300 000 on a hatchback "VW" car? For a wife that does not work and just transports the kids around in it? The Ford Focus ST suits that role perfectly. However the GTI has CLASS. Many people said to my mother. Whats going on? Going from a BMW Full House 3 series exec to a Golf?? The point is. When you own a Golf you dont just own a overtuned car.

You own a car that is internationally recognised. A car that shouts wow when you turn a corner. A car that screams quality and speed. You wont get that from a Ford. Who cares if its half the price with more features? Becasue thats the only way Ford is able to sell that car. And we all know who is going to be buying it.... Cough.... Racerboys... cough.....

This is my opinion. Please dont see this as hate speech. Point is.... FORD out.....

GTI IN!!!!

Michael

Yes it is the volvo 2.5t - I think its 5 cylindar. I am sure ill be corrected if its not lol!

I would never own a focus ST even though i think it looks pretty good in the right colour - ORANGE LOOKS WRONG!
I have always been a golf man and always will be regardless.

Back on topic . . . .

tiff is a total arsehole anyway. he really anoys me  didnt even know how to turn the esp off on the audi tt.

(And I bet VBH sucks it long time too, all the creeping she does)

Yup, she can suck mine anyday - but I'd have to gag her from squealing like a 12 year old

That turned into a bit of a rant, so in summery: Tiff = Arse. Golf STILL rules.

Trouble with Fifth Gear is they have to satisfy their commercial paymasters.  There "results" are nearly always biased toward the company that provides them with the most advertising revenue.  Similar things used to happen on that truely aweful program on Ch4 called "Drivel" . . . sorry, Driven!    And HTF did that Penny Mallory even get off the start line in a rally car, all the pathetic screaming she used to come out with.

Regarding Tiff, yes, he is a driving God, but he talks utter shyte.

I only watch Fifth Gear for it's entertainment factor, and not any factual information.
