Title: 18 mpg!
Post by: Mav on 08 February 2004, 20:37
Had my 16v for a few months now, lovely motor. Met some golf 16v owners outside german and swedish and asked them how their fuel consumption was. 33/32 they both said. obviously they shat their pants when I told them I was getting 18mpg max. Any ideas?

How hard are you driving it and is it running ok?. Get the emissions checked.
Steve.

I've had it on the rolling road, and the emissions, mixture etc are all fine.
I never get any more than 21 mpg on a motorway run at 70mph. ???

Faulty sensors/MFA unit?

My MPG readings are very low aswell although the actual petrol consumption doesn't seem too bad.  Not too much different to my mates Astra GSi.

Can't find any local scrappers with gti's in stock still containing the MFA parts and a repair looked to be quite costly so I just don't bother with it.  Only use it for oil temp, journey time, distance and average speed.

I had the same problem once, and it turned out to be a tiny air leak. Have a listen when the cars running to see if you can hear any air being sucked in.
