I would just like to offer an apology to all GTI owners out there. :embarassed:
Yesterday on the way home from work my mind was wandering and I wasnt really concentrating on the main business in hand (i.e. driving the car properly) :nerd:
When I got home I realised I had an average MPG of 40!!! (rather than the usual 30ish). I feel I have let the side down with my bimbling drive and am very ashamed :undecided:
Rest assured it will not happen again and said GTI will be thrashed within an inch of its life from now on

You should never thrash a GTi, it should only ever be driver spiritedly.

40mpg !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best i've had is 34mpg and that was on motorway. Around the town i get anywhere between 25 - 29mpg using V-Power.
Mine seems to be getting some serious attention! Some people dont even know what it is. Only 3 or 4 around my end. Only 1 other in black and 3-dr that i have seen
-
u think 40 mpg is bad!!.. i got overtaken by a VW van yesterday, looked down and i was only doing 52mph in a 60!!
my excuse.... sometimes i have bad days at work!!..LOL!!!
spank me now!!!
-
Oh well if its confession time....I havn't even used the flippy paddles yet...not quite sure how to drive with them as flooring the auto seems to be good enough for me !!
-
Alas Father I also have sinned....
My GTi 1000 mile running in period has lasted all of 300 miles before taking a mate for a spin around some seriously twisty roads and returning a mere 17mpg!
It is utterly impossible to keep it below 3500rpm
-
well i give mine a good thrashing now and then. I call it "servicing"
Mind you, V-Power is on offer today at Yarm-on-Tees Shell garage - for one day only it is the same price as standard unleaded!
Looks like i'll have to make some room in my tank to fill up by adding a few miles
-

Ours gets a decent thrashing every Sunday....
Other then that it gets driven like a snail during the week..... :embarassed:
-
I never seem to get more than 27 mpg on a motorway 23on average. Is there something wrong with it?
-
symonkey, i know whats wrong, its called heaviuos rightfootyous, ive found what helps is, driving with no air con running and also using paddles in manual mode if you have a dsg version, and not letting it get up into 6th gear which mine trys to do as soon as it can causing it to labour alittle.ive gone from average town mpg from 26 mpg to the sultry heights of 31.5 mpg!!, My £30 of fuel from recent and regular fuel stops might get me 230 mile range from it!
-
im getting 30.2mpg around the town at the moment
using v-power. Who said sports cars are not economical
-
I once did a steadty run from birmingham to manchester-shire.
The estimated range of the full tank went up to 550 miles.
-
Wow I was impressed with my 450 mile range. Never actually managed it though.
-
The return trip was less steady and returned to about 300 miles.
-
yes seems to be average of 300 to 310 mile range for town driving on £50 worth of 99 octane. havent done long journeys yet more then 50 miles but will be on my honeymoon going down to the southwest from here so expect to get a good result from it then

Shocked . . .
Don't you find the delay in kick down irritating. OK, if you are crawling along in 6th and kickdown could say send the box directly to 2nd - then fairy-nuff - but like that - the turbo won't have spooled, and so you will still have turbo lag.
Did you know you can still use the flappy paddles whilst in normal auto "D" or sport auto "S" modes. Try and play with the paddles - you can't fcuk anything up - and when you have finished playing "tunes", the 'box will default back to auto mode after about 3 minutes of no paddle use - or if you want to immediately go back to auto, pull and HOLD the right + paddle for two seconds.

lol

After getting a shock when I worked out what mpg I was getting around town on a full tank, approx 22mpg, I tried to 'behave' on the motorway.
After a steady 160 mile run with approx 80% motorway miles, this was what my car read.......

I just had to take a piccie of it. (Cr@p picture I know)

my record is 480 miles - what speed where you driving at? 30mph
-
I'm lucky if I get 300 miles on a tank of super juice... and my front tyres are down to 3mm with 6,000 on the clock. As they say, it's smiles per gallon not miles per gallon.
-

About 55- 60.
Sad, I know

Please refer to Topher's post on this thread re. rule 7

i can only dream of some of the figures quoted on this thread. When i got my ED30 we were running it in and i was averaging about 27mpg, and i thought that was bad. Now run in and doing the daily commute we have been as low as 23-24mpg. 30mpg+ seems like a whole world away. I dont think i could achieve that even if i tried! Maybe there is something wrong with the car.
ps - i have never not used my paddles, too tempting having them there!
-
Now my Gti is run in (well mostly at 3300 miles) she is averaging a long term 33mpg. Not too bad and she does take some heavy right foot action as well and stop start dual carriageways.
-
i cant belive some of you guys are only getting 23-25mpg's.
On a full tank im hitting around 330 - 350miles around the town (circa 27 - 30mpg) and i dont drive under 30mph nor do i let my revs go under 2000!
Havent really taken it for a long trip anywhere yet.........
-
but maximus, i bet you live on the outskirts of town and dotn live in the big smoke, mine will average about 32 outa town on B roads and A roads, but she will only get between 26-28 town posing
