Post by: [han] on 16 May 2007, 08:24
riht for those of you who didnt know, i finally got the crappycabby back from the garage who had it 3 weeks!!!

£280 later, she's running! still not entirely sure what they've done, as not got the receipt yet - nor have i paid LOL! She's running like a total heapa sh!t! :'( she's idling crap! drove to ferrybridge on sunday, (my bday) and she was running fine in the pissin wet, until we got almost there! then she starting shaking like a sh!tting dog! like a bad misfire! after that she was ok-ish but still not performing like a true GTI yesterday she's had new dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs and leads in the hope that she'll be better!

but on the upside she's gettin booked in for a RR and set up! woop woop! so atleasrt she's home!

Sorry to hear it's still causing problems... don't you have any decent VAG tuners up there that know what they're doing?

Reason I say this is due to my own bad experience with a so called VW specialist who fitted a new bottom end in my Corrado and then spent nigh on a year trying to get it running right - he changed every sensor twice, checked and re-checked everything over and over and couldn't find the fault which essentialy meant I couldn't take the revs over 4K

So, in the end I got my car back still not right and hadn't a clue where to go or what to do next... not to mention the money that I'd spent!

A few months later I remembered The Phirm (http://www.thephirm.co.uk) were not a million miles away and decided it'd be worth taking it down there to see if they could think of anything that may just cure it... and they did - took Tim all of 20 minutes to diagnose the problem and he had it back to me in a couple of days running spot on and thats how it stayed right up to me selling it!

May not really be that helpful but sometime it can pay to see another 'specialist' as a fresh pair of eyes may spot something otherwise missed...

Best of luck getting it sorted - looks fantastic in the pics btw :)

Yes but do they work with golfs? You may go round and round in circles until you get a specialist to look at it.. who might sort the problem in 5 mins (as phils example).

No normal garage, no matter how much they big themselves up, can even come close to a genuine vw specialist when you have a fault to fix.

have you tried these guys?

Gilpin Brothers Garage
Linden, Main St, High Catton, York, North Yorkshire YO41 1EL
Tel: 01759 371101

I will be taking my mk2 to them when it needs work.  I used to use them when I had my last golf (2001) and they were V good and reasonably priced.  They are VW specialists with about a million years of experience between them. lol.

Cheers,

S

cars back at the garage opposite my house, as its practical... she's broken.. AGAIN!

this time the oil warning light and stoopid buzzer come on at 2000 revs and then stay on until you turn the car off, even at idle.

Hopefully it's just the sender or the pump... hmmmm.... silly cabs!!!

Han did the tappets become noisy when the buzzer went off, if so you have genuine low oil pressure if not it's probably a sensor.
If you do have low oil pressure ask the garage to whip the sump off and check the gauze on the oil pump pickup for blockages. The missus' mk2 developed a low oil pressure problem and the buzzer kept going off I cleaned all the carbon crap off the gauze and it was fine afterwards.
Defiantely worth trying if funds are running low.

Completely agree with this, in fact I had an independent VW specialist correctly diagnose a fault over the phone, that the VW dealer couldn't fix !  and this was on a modernish dub too!

Take it to a garage who know what an engine looks like Han otherwise your just throwing money at some spanner monkey. VAG specialist is a hassle but well worth it there is one in Leeds with a good reputation I know of if you are stuck. :)
