hi there everyone. this is my first post so hello all, i use to own a mk1 golf about a year ago and have just bought a mk2 gti 8v on a C plate. the only problem is, i have a fault with the lights and wipers. basicly, the main beam doesnt work and the full beam only works when the switch is held to the flash position. the side lights work. the full beam does not stay on and the wipers only work when the full beam switch is held back. also the blowers only work when the full beam switch is pulled back. anyone know whats going on. help please

woh, sounds like a bad dream!
Has this just happened or did you get the car like this? if you have just bought it/ found the problem, you might want to take the dash suround out and see if someone has had a go at splicing the wires together after a break in? if it's suddenly happened then I'd check the fuse box for any water leaks or shorting out, becareful downthere! (pull the fuse out for the MFA if you have one, you don't want to fry the clocks if there is a majour fusebox issue!) might want to invest in some electrical test kit, or find a mate/ auto electrian.
Good Luck

i bought it from a friend who hadnt had a problem before. it was fine until about a hour ago. thought it might be either the fuse, light switch or the full beam switch. also whats the mfa?

problem solved. right here goes, when you take away the plastic casing around the steering column youll see at th end of the ignition barrel (key part) there is a plate that needs to be pressed for the lights etc to work. when the steering column cover is screwed on it presses against the plate and activates the electrics and so on. my golf being old, the cover isnt as tight as it should be so wasnt pressing up against the plate. gonna get a cover from the breakers but until then ive wrapped a zip tie round the cover and it seems to work. cheers for the help thuogh peeps and remember this if it happens to any of your motors.
