Background:

This is my second project on here, and the reason i have this car is due to the other project! Basically, my gti is off the road at the moment until i get round to doing a few bits to get it through an MOT, but seeing as I have uni exams at the moment it is not priority number 1.  I paid for my insurance this year in one go, so having a gti sat at home seemed a bit of a waste as i was pretty much paying for it. Soooo, when a cheap runaround came up i couldn't resist.........

A bit about the car:

It is an '87 gti of the 8 valve variety, with 5 doors and in Atlas Grey (my third now!). It includes optional extras such as Central Locking and erm, that's it! It's one of the cross-over models with a Digifant engine but lhd wipers, front quarterlight windows etc. Probably the worst of both worlds!

Anywho, it's got 87k on the clock with pretty much all previous MOTs so it seems to check out alright. Mechanically it seems ok, feels a bit slower than my past gti's but i'll have a look into that soon. The interior has seen better days though, especially the driver's seat. Let's just say a previous driver must have been slightly bigger than me

The only pics i have at the moment (from the for sale ad):

The first job i had a go at was sorting the driver's lock as it was a pain in the arse locking and unlocking from the passenger side. If you tried from the driver's side the lock barrel would just keep spinning round and would sometimes come out, obviously not good!

On taking the handle apart i found that all of the little pins had fallen out of the barrel. So as a temporary measure, i have taken the lock from the passenger handle and plonked it in the driver's handle. For the passenger side i just put in a lock from some old doors that i have. I don't have the key though, but it isn't too important for now with central locking. Which brings me onto the next bit.......

Before i swapped the locks over, all of the doors would lock and unlock from the passenger side. However, when i got the driver's door locking and unlcoking from the key, none of the other doors would lock! I took the doorcard off and found the reason why immediately: broken wire. 5 minutes and a soldering iron and it was back together. The central locking is now fully functioning all from the driver's door. Oh the luxury!!!

A couple of crappy pics showing the doorcard off:

The broken wire (the black one):

While i was taking both front handles off i stuck some armour door plates on that i had lying around:

One thing i did find whilst doing this was that my doors have a lack of plastic membranes. That is another job for the near future, even though it should be now as it's pissing it down!

Not a picture update as they'd be pretty boring photos!

I'm slowly making my way through the list. The radio is now in, back-box re-aligned with no banging at all now and i have a temporary steel wheel on the rear left but can't get the bolt out of the centre cap on the rear right!

A bit of wd40 on the rear caliper seems to have sorted it. Guess it was just a sticky handbrake?
