Have seen on Ebay some of the VW sat nav screen units...I have a tomtom thingy but like the neatness of the vw fitted unit...how easy (or difficult!) would it be to buy and retro fit? (I wouldnt do it myself!)...anyone else done this?

If you mean a MKV, it's pretty easy apparantly and lots of people have done it. See:

I did it on my Mk5, no issues at all. No changes to the wiring, you just unplug the big square plug and insert into the new unit. Becareful unplugging the old aerial connections, don't just yank them off, there is a little tab to push in (you can do it with your finger)to get them to come off.
