Title: New member and GTi owner
Post by: Dougie_91 8v GTi on 13 May 2007, 20:04
Hi all,

Very happy with my 2 week old ebay purchase, a 1991 J plate 8v GTi 3 door in tornado red (was pink before the t-cut).  Bargain buy for £605, sunroof not leaking, MFA works perfectly, average 37.3mpg, reached up to 50.1mpg. MOT till October and tax till September. No history or manuals (yet! -owner in house move) except all MOT's back to 67k, and last owner a police officer!

Body work not perfect 7.75/10, minor rust and a few small knocks, but interior is 9.5/10. Drives like a dream, can't believe I waited so long to get one of these cars!

She really was a lucky buy, the owner could only get the CD to work not the radio, ariel cable was not plugged into the back of the stereo, and he didn't realise it had a working ariel till I pulled it out! Sunroof stopped working after he had it a week, a nut had come undone and it had sunk, works perfectly now, although I did replace the supprt arm for the wind deflector as it had rusted slightly.  There are a few issues to sort out, namely:

1. Skirt on the passenger side - has been hit/caught slightly, minor rust bubble on door base and sill.
2. Wheels need refurbishment, and hub caps - had to replace the missing one £4.
3. Foils around boot window, under spoiler. - replacement boot obviously not GTi spec.
4. Rust areas on rear quarters under lights - repair after accident damage probably, not major.
5. Small dink on front wing by headlight driver side - victim of parking landrover apparently!
6. 20p size rust spot drivers door.
7. Cambelt change (booked in in the next fortnight)
8. Service (want to check on the details re: Digifant tuning)
9. Front fog lights, yellow? Not continent prepped - water ingress, need to clean/replace.
10. Damn good clean and wax - has been T-cut, but needs several waxes to bring it back.

There are still little things like a tiny little dink in the roof, parcel shelf straps knackered, and a really thorough clear out of the pine needles from the boot carpet that need doing, but that aside, I am genuinely really, really chuffed with this car, and the performance for a standard unmodifed car is very, very strong.  I am really loving the ownership experience so far.  Total costs to date, £40 for smoked real lights, from a 16v at the breakers, and £140 for the middle exhaust sections.

I'll add these larger images of her so you can see the general condition before and after a quick clean.
