Hi all, I've searched all over (here, vwvortex) looking for an answer to this problem to no avail.
Car is a 160k 8v.
This problem only appeared a couple of weeks ago and I haven't done many miles since, did a long journey though and it was fine.
If I have the power on in gear, there is no problem. However, lift off the throttle in gear and it makes a knocking noise which corresponds to road speed. The noise isn't that loud, just concerning. The noise is also there in neutral, but it is less loud.
I am pretty sure its neither inner or outer CV joints as going round corners doesn't make any difference. I had the front left wheel off and it all looks fine on there. I read a comment somewhere that if it makes a noise in reverse it might be the diff, anyway nothing in reverse.
I replaced the gearbox on it about 3-4 years ago, so who knows how many miles its got on it. It still shifts fine though, and there's no noticeable whine.
Anyone got a diagnosis?

I don't have a clue about gear boxes, but i'd assume if it makes the noise in neutral as well as in gear then it will be in the box rather than drive shaft etc related?

By coincidence I have the exact same problem on my car....thought it might be offside driveshaft!...await further replies

Could be be the release bearing for the clutch? If the noise goes in dipped clutch as well as heavy throttle then that could be it, if the gearbox was done four years ago and the clutch not done since depending on the amount of miles you done could be the whole clutch!
Hope you find it soon.
