Title: So..How's everyone's ED30 etc
Post by: Hurdy on 12 May 2007, 01:08
So, how is everyone getting on with their ED30's?

Has the honeymoon phase subsided - or are you still in love?

Any problems - or is everything tikkety boo?

Added anything to "improve the breed"?

Blown away any decent cars - or pootling along to keep up the MPG?

Personally I love mine still, and every day is an excuse -"want that taking to your mother's darling" or "just popping to the shops"

I've had the standard dash centre rattle , but that's all sorted now and she purrs along quietly now.

You'll all be dismayed to know that I've still got my "chavvy" beesting aerial. It comes in really handy in a big carpark as I just look for the brightest aerial :embarassed:

Recently had a Kenwood satnav system fitted along with all new component speakers
The sound is fantastic and the functionality of the Kenwood unit blows the standard MFD2 unit into the weeds IMHO

Recently took her out for a blast and just after coming out of a junction had a MK4 R32 appear up my arse. I would have loved to have seen the look on his face when he pulled level with me(dual carriageway) and I winked at him and then nailed it - but I couldn't as he was too far behind me

Summing up, I truly think that there isn't another car out there for the same cash that could possibly give me the same feelings as I get when I look at or drive my ED30. If it was a woman it would be Angelina Jolie - fit, agile, adventurous and good looking and looks best in silver (see the cover of Tomb Raider 2!)

good summing up there,i cant put it any better than that, the only thing that i have done is painted my wheel hubs cause they had the usual rust tarnishing starting to apear.

Just sold mine  :embarassed:  did 8000 miles in 6/7 weeks of driving - it was garaged for the first 3/4 weeks.  Coming from a DSG R32, I didn't like it at first but in the last week after 7k miles it started to show a different character and really moved after 4k rpm.  I've got another - exactly the same but with DSG - coming in October.  I have a VR6 Highline for the summer and I have to day that the speakers in the Highline are far better than the Edition 30/R32/Mk5 GTI ones. And yes, the VR6 speakers are standard.

Go on illyun - tell us what did ye get for it?????

I actually like mine too much to sell - infact still happy with the paln to keep for quite a while - managed to persuade the wife now that she has paid off her car that we both pay for mine over the next three years, sell hers, keep the golf and both chip in for some sort of monster - so the golfs going to be a round for a while - why not its great!
Still only just done over 2k miles (been using the van alot of recent) but the suspension change is deffo happening next week - the eibach's have arrived - well looking forward to that. The re-map will happen at some time but just not now. Still planing to do the rear valance in black
Got a small dent in the passenger door a couple weeks ago - car park jobbie  but its an easy reapir job so not soooo bad.
Rockinghams are the best wheels i've had on a car - sometimes i think they look too small other times i think they look great however, i cannot argue how easy they are to keep clean - they also get a lot of positive remarks and deffo is a key indicator of a special edition. A white van man asked me at the trafifc lights the other day about it being a special edition - i thought i was in for a bit of road rage - but no - 'nice motor mate'!)

Had mine 1 month now and it is just run in, it just gets better, i absolutly love it and find any excuse to go drive, the novelty has not worn off at all yet. Found a couple of small cracks on the rear valance (left and right side) about the same distance in, the first time i washed her, noticed water bubbling through, a replacement on order which will be changed under warranty.

3 weeks in and 1700 miles on the clock. Enjoying every minute so far. No real problems yet, other than an annoying rattle inside that sounds like keys "tinkling" (but it's not), and I can't quite pin down, and the leather on the golfball gearchange is beginning to wrinkle slightly

still loving mine :)

Got the usual couple of stone chips on the front, but apart from that, it has been faultless.
3300 miles at the mo, fully run in, and the acceleration from 3500rpm onwards is fantastic

No mods or accessories yet, other than a Wolfsburg plate frame for the rear of the car
Am likely to be moving house in the next six months, so keeping all cash spare for that :D

Gave it a full valet myself with Swissol cleaner fluid and Swissol Sapphir wax...water just beads and runs off now :)

Enjoying mine - gives you the feel good factor and nice to get in after a day at work.
I am looking to change my ICE - Hurdy can you tell me what set up you have please?
What speakers did you go for?  - I have noticed more than other GTI's I have had before
that this car turns heads   - Running out of excuses to go out driving at the weekend
though..

Lifted the centre grill (carefully) and re-seated it with velcro. Quite a push to get it back on, but doesn't move a millimetre now

I have had a set of Hertz 3 way component speakers in the front and Hertz coax in the back. All doors Dynamatted. Couldn't bring myself to put in a big sub in the boot as it is usually full of other stuff anyway. Glorious sound compared with standard :smug:

Loving mine, just need more time in it!  Only commute 8 miles to work each day so still running it in but can feel the car begging to be thrashed (and she will be! ).

No gripes yet, no rattles or any build quality issues.  Wasnt happy with the brakes for the first hundred miles or so but them seem to have bedded in now and are fine.

Only pain is keeping it clean but it looks sooooo good when done :)

Great Car, can't fault it AT ALL.

Just over 2000 miles now, still no dings (always take up two spaces in the car parks, don't care what people say!) and no stone chips either.

Love the colour and cleaning it once a week seems to keep it looking good. Wheels look great, drive is superb and I just love getting in it every day and driving it.

I'm an IT Contractor working as a Network Architect/Tester.  I was working at BT for 2 years in Ipswich and decided to buy a house there - moving in next week - and 6 weeks ago I was temporarily seconded to the Orange Triple-Play (TV, Broadband and Voice over your telephone line) project for 3 months initially but now it looks like its going to be a year.  So I commute to Bristol every week from Ipswich and am quite busy during the weekends so get around a bit.

Lovin every second - its now my second home!  Fantastic car, however, had a small stone chip at the front and a hairline scratch near the rear.  There is one thing - wonder if anyone else has the same small problem - there is a shudder from the rear passenger seat whenever i go over a bump, which mysteriously disappears when someone is sitting on the left hand side in the back.  Anyone know what it is/how to fix it?

Undo the chair so that it can split forwards.

Then after making sure that there are no little fingers etc  in the way.
SLAM THE CHAIR BACK INTO POSITION!!!

Ok dont be so rough but just make certain that the chair is back tightly and that should cure the rattling. If there is a slight rattle while driving check the clips which you push to loosen the chair the plastic sometimes rattles.

Hope that kind of helps

AAGH MY FINGERS!! Thanks for the advice.  I'm pretty certain the seat is in position, but the shudder still sometimes comes.  I think i have narrowed down the sound to the centre seat though - whenever i thump the back of the rear centre seat, just under the headrest, the same sound comes - kinda difficult to explain!  Not a big problem anyway, cause i count on the growling from the engine to drown the sound!   Have tried to get a vw techi to have a look but didn't seem to know why it was coming.

Well - picked up my silver 5 door Ed30 on Saturday afternoon and she's lovely. Had a few semi-spirited drives with family admirers yesterday (is 21mpg about right??  )  and whilst it's early days she seems great - especially the grip thro' corners. Pleased mpg was substantially better this morning with more sedate drive. (boring but financial necessity!).
In comparison with Brother in law's Astra VXR it's quite refined - his is more raw boy racer, with annoying traction control / or is it just less traction?
So early thoughts are that I'm going to be a very happy bunny for next 3 years.  BTW anybody do free tutorials on Road Angel 7000 - it's just seems so complex.

After reading so many posts in this Thread im quite considering trading in my GTI for an ED 30, no one has one in Gibraltar and could be nice being "unique" for a while, how much do you think the stealers would take my car in for and how much would they expect me to pay for an ED 30?  :undecided:

Not worth it manu!!, you will loose Thousands of pounds on trading up, red stitching or pimply knob your thing, or is it just you want to get to 60  0.3 of a second faster or 0.1 if you have DSG??, Prepare to shell out at least £6000 more, its not worth it unless you wanna throw money away

Not sure what the hype is about this edition 30. I personally would rather have a standard GTI. For some or other reason I do find that obviously the edition 30 is unique. But for me the Cons outweigh the pros. Its a bit more powerful. Has no leather. And I dont like the rims. I like the black rockinghams but still even with those it means nothing to me.

I dont mean to cause any offence to those Edition 30 owners. But to me i feel that VW didnt do enough to make the edition 30 "Special". Manu_GTI. Keep your GTI. Save your £6000 and modify your GTI. You might find that in the end you will have your own unique car. Modified to your tastes and not to some VW Designers taste.

Hate to be so negative. But honestly. I just dont see what the hype is about this edition 30. It just does not do it for me.

I think that most owners who own a normal GTI may end up colour coding anyway, not to sure why  :undecided: probably because it looks better and doesnt leave the unfinished look on the car

some people like the colour coding, others don't

Personally, I used to prefer the black trim, but after living with the Edition 30 for nearly 3 months now, it has grown on me hugely :)

Well I finally picked mine up on Mon and have only just found the time to put a post on here about it.  Only covered 150 miles so far as I've been maxed out at work. However, the weekend is approaching!  Anyway, first impressions are that its a very smooth and refined car and even keeping the revs below 2500 rpm I can feel the torque and power.  It also handles a dream compared to my old MkIV GTI PD150 and pulls from much lower down the rev range, with no turbo lag. Only main fault at the moment is the upgraded sound system. The door cards can't handle the upgraded speakers so cause distortion.   I will be having words with my dealer about this.
As soon as I get the chance I will upload the photos and put them on this site. Anyway, here's to good weather this weekend.

Hully,
Complain about the distortion and then add that Dynamat is good for soaking up the unwanted vibrations and see if they put some at the back of the door cards for you (for free with a bit of persuasion!)

Dynamat dampens unwanted vibrations and is used by professional and eager amateurs to keep the sound inside the car and give a purer sound from the audio system. :nerd:

You just have to ask the question; why don't VW offer the Dynaudio system that they offer on the EOS and Passat?  Surely it would make sense?

good question. I mean, cmon VW, this is ANNIVERSARY EDITION! Put Dynaudio, or Bose, or something on it. I am prepared to pay for this! No... you can't have USB with the stereo.

I wish I knew what you guys were rambling about :lipsrsealed:
I find that the sound system in our GTI is excellent. The sound and Bass is extreme. On just under half my mother still complains its to much. We dont have rattles or anything.

I have only one complaint. The Ipod link is crap!!Normal CD or Radio and its like wow! But the factory fitted ipod link is utter tosh. No clarity and it sounds like a tin can.
Another thing I noticed is that although there are no rattles the bodywork bounces around a lot on the outside. Was cleaning the car two days ago and playing a Justin Timberlake lol number and while drying the bodywork actually noticed it flexing quite a bit. Im not complaining though.

Besides that i give the sound system a 4.5 out of 5 rating. Should I mention that the Pug 206 sound system is actually better?
Come on VW what are we paying for here???
Our pajero has one of those old school systems. Four speakers and 2 tweeters. Although its 7 years old the clarity is brilliant. Whereas you expect more from a newer split system like in the Pug and GTI. Seems as if VW is going backwards in this regard.  (HINT HINT VW)

Our car was built in SA so not sure if what you guys in the UK get is different. We didnt even get an option for a soundpack. Just one standard system (RCD 500 I think) and thats it. But cant complain. Blasts the socks off my mates and dad.

My opinion on this much discussed topic

if you have the Mfd 2 sat nav fitted, it has the 2 extra speakers fitted, and i agree , i think it sounds good, never any distortion. They must be talking about the basic radio with 8 speakers

Well there is RCD500, and there is RCD500 with Sound System, which means higher output speakers and an amplifier under back seat. What I've read so far in different forums is that sound system causes door cards to vibrate, and that it does not produce significantly better sound than normal RCD500. For me these two factors were enough to cancel sound system and just go with RCD500.

RCD500 includes 10 speakers.

I'm happy with the way the audio sounds in mine.

I had a TT previously with BOSE speakers ( and yes it was fractionally better), but not 500quid+ better.

I run IPOD ( not VW standard, but an after market one that the dealer fitted in the glove box) in and apart from the aliasing sounds you hear from any MP3/AAC audio system at volume, its just as good.

Try sampling a few MP3's at a higher bitrate and see if that makes the IPOD sound better.

Nope sorry to add, the car is one of the best I have ever had driving and looks wise.

I'm getting on abit now, and things change when you get to 30, you still look at 0-60 and rim sizes but its not top of the list, things like being a little discreet and practical things start creeping into the brain to make you think mmmm thats handy.

Regarding the above the ED30 ticks all the boxes and in black, I really like the fact when its clean it looks really mint, and is a look twice car, but when dirty blends in with the crowd which is useful when parking where it is sometimes.

Only big gripe is the sound system, it is crap really crap. Just had standard VW basic system and the speakers distort terrible, for a VW / Audi group car I was expecting more, my basic comapny car Audi A6 is in a different leauge with its BOSE system!

Hey

Been there done that. Copied all my music at the highest sampling rate Itunes can offer. Still sounds

Its the RCD500 with sound upgrade that were talking about Phil. It comes with 10 speakers, but has already been mentioned, the door cards cannot handle the extra power and vibrate terribly causing distortion to the base. Listen to any track with a lot of base and you'll see what I mean.

The amp is under the front passenger seat and its about the only way, apart from listening, to tell whether you have the sound pack or not.

Hully,

Did you ask your dealer about Dynamat in the door cards?

Yes, but he hadn't heard of it and I've got to take it back in so the "engineers" can have a listen to it.  I'll mention it to them as well.  Don't worry I'll keep trying.

Just finished my first 1000 miles in mine and its still great...

Since I got it, I had the family holiday in Florida, and had to drive some american 'mr softy suspension' mobile, and it was a true joy to come back and drive the Ed30.

Had it out for its first decent distance run... Comfortable, classy and effortless....

Roll on the next n x 1000's of miles... :)
