Title: tighten steering column

hello all

has anyone ever attempted to tighten their steering column :o, think i need to do this, after taking off the plastic covers where do i locate this nut to tighten the column....

By you saying remove the plastic covers I am assuming you mean the coloumn bolts that hold the coloumn to the dashboard bracket inside the car.

These are shear bolts and if loose you'll have to drill them out or use an easyout to remove them. Although saying that if they are that loose you might be able to unwind them with a pair of mole grips.

Replace with new bolts.

i have a slight knocking feeling in my steering when i turn the steering whilst standing.....I had this problem in my mums vectra and tightening the steering column helped sort it.

golfvr6: yes I am talking about the universal joint.  

Modulator: The plastic covers I am talking about are the black covers that cover the steering column, just the bit of black plastic put there to look pretty and cover the column

Do you have PAS? I had a knocking sound which was related to the PAS belt being to slack.
