Title: Sleeping in a golf ? poor mans travelling
Post by: themadatter on 08 May 2007, 03:48
Hey all,

Was thinking of going to England in a few days and could save a packet by just puling into those big service stations and sleeping in the car.

Anybody done this ? ever configured the seats in such a way to allow you to sleep in the back ?

Maybe I should have bought a VW camper...

Service stations only usually allow you 2 hours parking. Plus, I wouldn't want to sleep in a service station if I were you tbh  :undecided:

I would have thought the best thing would be to invest in a cheap tent and find a local campsite - most of them are opening up again for business at this time of year, iirc, they charge about £10 a night? But you'll no doubt be safer than in a car park!

I slept in my old golf a few times, was a little concerned about it but it was fine. For some reason tho, i agree with dubby and would get a tent, though im not sure why id feel safer in a bag held up by a few poles than surround in a ton of metal  :undecided:

There is also the problem of Drink! If you imbibe in a few and sleep in the car then you are considered in charge of the vehicle so can be done for DD.

'you can sleep in your car but you cant race your house'

i cant see what the problem with sleeping in your car is. Im always sleeping in my car when i cant be bothered to drive home or pitch a tent.  bit cold but have slept in worse places.  loads of duvets is the key. id stay away from the services tho, could be costly!

^ love the quote, many years ago I slept in a car for one night and that was one night too many and as already said if you go and have a skinfull then get back in the car you could be charged with "being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle".

won't get done off the police unless you have the keys in the ignition. hide the keys once you're in, and even if the police do come over, you don't have the keys so cannae be done.

it's rough as though, get a cheap-ass hotel!

I've slept in a Vectra in a car park in Belgium which is a whole new story in itself.

Worst nights sleep ever!

I just tilt the passenger side seat right down, pull it right back and just take a duvet in the rear & either a pillow or just use a jumper.. you'll sleep sound as mate..  I do it all the time when driving places, also if you get someon say 2 hours max or whatever just say you're waiting for recovery but they won't pick you up till tomorrow and you've got no cash on you.
