Does anyone know how to solve the problem of the windows dropping into the door. This is the second time it has happened to me,but this time unlike the first time which was a warranty claim it is going to cost me to get it repaired. Can anyone tell me how much it will coast to have repaired or give me any tips to make the job easier if I do it myself. All tips would be welcomed >:(

had this happen to me, cost me just under ?200 to get sorted at vw!!, there is now replacement metal clips which replace the plastic ones which are prone to breaking, the actual window regulator panel is about ?60 and i would buy one your self and spend an afternoon fitting!! (just make sure has metal clips) then u need torx drivers and some other tools to get door panel off and repair, relitively easy though i havent done mine, but removed reg panel to wedge glass up when mine broke so wont be much harder than that!! ;D

Thanks Kniterider for your prompt reply. I will do what you advise rather than get ripped off by a garage. My other car a MK 2 16V had the same problem and that was so much easier to repair than this one. Again, Thanks

I've recently bought an 03 GTI (diesel). As this problem appears to have been known about for quite some time, do you think it likley that VW might have changed late-ish cars coming off the production line to have metal clips instead of pastic clips ?
I haven't suffered this problem myself but I wonder if it might be a good idea to replace these clips with the metal versions before the window(s) drop ? Any thoughts ? kind regards, yt.

GUYS !!! Dont pay, i rang up VW headquarters and asked customer services who actually paid for the repair out of warranty. It was the second time it has happened to me and i refuse to pay as VW are very aware of this problem but seem to not give a toss really.
ring them up first before u pay, sometimes they will help u with the cost

I just changed my drivers unit last weekend, was really P****D when they said they didnt just sell the plastic clips and i needed to buy a whole unit, was all ready going to write to VW about it, but when i found out they had now uprated them to metal clips thet just annoyed me more... so pen has already met paper..... might give them a call too now, speazzzzz where did you get the number to call?

just rang VW headquarters in Milton Keynes i think and asked for a number for VW customer services, but i think any dealer will give you the number. No need for any letter action, they are usual y pretty good over the phone. but dont take no crap from them

If you've got a 5 door Golf/Bora, I believe these are the part numbers for the repair kits for the front doors with metal clips:
1JM-898-462 Drivers
1JM-898-461 Passenger
If yours is a 3 door then these are the numbers:
1JE 898 100 - Drivers Side
1JE 898 099 - Passenger side
I've also heard that the 3 door kits are much cheaper than the 5 door versions!
Good Luck

i had the same problem and replaced the drivers side clips with metal ones last week, takes a while to do bust fairly straight forward, i think www.vwvortex.com has some really detailed instructions on how to fit them, parts for one door came to ?31.
i will drop vw a letter to get a refund.
Cheers

That happened to me..Took it to the dealers,he said VW know about the problem and are prepared to meet 50% of the costs..So it cost me ?75..
He said its a global problem,(confirmed to me by an american golf owner)and they are just waiting for the cars to come in!!!!!. I asked if the problem still exists,<points to a new golf> and he said if I bought that one it will still happen?.. I rang VWUK HQ and they also confirmed what my dealer said.. Good luck
