I ordered an Ed30 in grey after a couple of test drives back in Feb.  It should be with me in the next 6 weeks or so.
Like you I have a 9855R that I was going to take with me - but then I've swapped it for a iDA-X001 instead cause I found the iPod controls on the 9855R too annoying!  I also have the KCE-300BT on order too.
I currently have a CanBus adapter, a fascia plate, an aerial converter and I also have a shark fin aerial on its way - so I can get it all installed as soon as the car arrives!  There are a few tutorials on swapping head units if you look around.

There is supposed to be a MK6 Golf out in Autumn 2008 which worried me a little, but then people say that the GTI wont get a replacement until after that.  I cant be bothered waiting a year and a half for a car (3 months is bad enough) so I'm just sticking with my order!

Have a look around the forum and read what people say who've recently purchased an Ed30.  There are plenty of good reviews on the net, and plenty of happy customers and pics on here!

gawd, im worried about the wait!! is that normal wait??

where did u buy the bits from? does it work with the steering controls?
Title: Re: Thinking about it...
Post by: p3eps on 07 May 2007, 23:15
The CanBus adapter was from www.racetechuk.com for about £70 I think - and should work with the steering controls.  The fascia was about £10, the sharkfin was about £25 and the aerial adapter was about £3 - all from eBay.

The normal wait for a new Ed30 seems to be about 12-16 weeks depending on your dealers allocation. Some get it slightly quicker, and others are longer.  Kinda sucks!!
Title: Re: Thinking about it...
Post by: SteveS on 07 May 2007, 23:24
gawd, thats quite a wait!!

i tried looking on that site and couldnt find the canbus? lol maybe im being stupid
So this £70 product would allow me to control the 9855r?

Dont suppose u have msn do u mate?
Title: Re: Thinking about it...
Post by: p3eps on 07 May 2007, 23:30
I couldnt find the CanBus on there either, but if you email them they'll sort you out.
Cant remember the exact price, but pretty sure it was about £70 ish.
You can wire up the 9855 with a cheap £10 ebay adapter, but it takes a bit of jiggery pokery and wont auto dim with your headlights or work with the steering controls.  Racetech sell the Blapunkt CanBus which is universally compatible with all stereos and is probably the cheapest one too.

No MSN for me... I don't have the time for it anymore

It sure is a LONG wait though... feels like an eternity to me!

just been told i would have to wait 7-12weeks for one!!! gawd

I was told 8-12 weeks - but it looks like its going to be nearer 16 by the time it actually turns up

Don't get me wrong, ED30s are nice, but what about any other car you could get for the best bit of £20k?

Impreza P1 for £8k on autotrader, £10k on some serious turbo work, £2k for a holiday.

if you have your heart set on a golf, what about a mk4 r32 and sort some tubby stuff out with the change?

Get a "normal" GTI and load it with spec then chip it to 270BHP. Save yourself a few quid.

(I didn't know about the ED30 when I ordered my car last July)

i'm running about in a 21 year old motor just now, don't see the problem with older cars, the money you save through depreciation will easily cover repairs/maintenace

Hi SteveS,

My Ed30 was ordered on the 18th Jan and I took delivery on the 28th March....so, a total wait of 10 weeks which I considered not too bad for a made to order limited edition model

Good points for me are more the feeling and pleasure I get when I open the garage door, when I open her up on a snaking B road and sinking into the comfortable, supportive, quality seats surrounded by a car that epitomises the 30 year evolution of an icon that is the GTI

True, the standard GTI is a very good car and if the Edition 30 hadn't cropped up then I am sure I would have signed on the dotted line for one. Also true that you can get a good discount against the standard GTI and spec up with the difference. The question you need to ask yourself is could you have an Edition 30 drive past you if you chose the standard GTI, knowing that you COULD have afforded one and not think of:-

The extra power.
The "relative" exclusivity
The colour coding
The half leather standard interior
The BBS pescara's (growing on me by the day)

There is only one conclusion you could possibly come to.....BUY THE EDITION 30

I have to say the thing that did it for me was the colour coded rear bumper!
I'd never really considered a Golf before I went into the showroom.  They had a white GTI sitting in the middle and I really wasnt impressed by the half black bumper or black sideskirts.
I spoke to the salesman about a test drive anyway (I had my heard set on a new Civic Type R), but after driving it I loved it.  I was then told about the Ed30 for an extra £2k and when I saw it, I knew I wanted one of them instead!

Like Hurdy said - Could you drive a standard GTI knowing that you could have had an Ed30 instead?!

I couldn't!  Hence why I ordered one!!!

Had the same experience,  only Ed30 was white and GTI was black (and still I did not like the bumper).

Some people prefer the look of the standard GTi, Also 2 grand buys you a lots of extra bits, Monza 18's rather then the pescaro type, Xeon lights, maybe some luxary pack which has some nice touches.
Depends on how much you wanna spend on Either model which are BOTH great cars. One DOESNT totally outshine the other like some may think.
My advice is to do this.....

Buy a year old or near as GTi,Same as anything brand new, you dont loose thousands driving it off the forecourt ( ask illyan, ollie82,goap)
Find one with lots of xtras, there are Hundreds available on Volkswagen.co.uk's website.
You can find a car of with what your after and save yourself thousands of pounds.
i saved £5000 buying a 12 months old car, mint condition from a dealer, which if i wanted it new would of set me Back £27800!. as much as i do like the edition 30, getting a basic version just to me makes absolute no sense, after having one with all the extras already , i wouldnt want one without it.Im sure in a years time, the same will be with lots of edition 30's available at the same price as 1 yr old GTi's are currently.

It is your decision after all, what ever it is, get a GTi, its class and not much betters it imo

Totally agree with Phil. Get a good spec GTI with 5000 miles on it and go for a really nice holiday with the saving. ED30 is very nice but is it 3K nicer than a new GTI or 6k nicer than a 6-12 month old GTI. I don't think so.

I got a brand new GTI with sunroof, ipod armrest, highline and 18" Monzas for 19.5K. Spent a few quid on nav and BBS Ch etc but i'm still in the money compared to an ED30. Also I reckon my car is still worth the lion's share of what I paid.

Got it from a main dealer in Glasgow (Verve) who I can put you in touch with if you like. They are always willing to deal.

As others have stated, it is down to personal preference.

The Ed30 wasn't available when SWMBO ordered her GTI - we were just choosing between the standard GTI and the R32.  We obviously went for the GTI, but colour-coded all the bumpers and sills as part of the deal, long before the Ed30 was out.

However, even if we were ordering now, I'd still go for the standard GTI - mainly because I don't like the Pescaras, and I do like the Monza IIs, and full leather.  OK, the 30 extra ponies would be nice, but in the "real" world, I doubt you would really notice, or be able to use them.  Afterall, a standard GTI with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 boots will easily out-handle an Ed30 (or standard GTI or R32) fitted with the Dunlop ShyteMaxx !!!

Another way to better use the performance you already have, without the need for bolt-on go faster bits, would be to get some coaching from Don Palmer - of "the wetter the better" !!!

Yes, it is.
And mine cost me equivalent of 19.4K quid.

Hi, My first post on this forum.  Sorry to ressurect such an old post.
I am looking at getting a new GTi, been shopping around the West of Scotland dealers and as yet not getting anywhere near the sort of prices quoted here!  What sort of discount should I pushing for?  Verve offered me £800 off but with a rubbish trade-in price.  Ingrams ayr offering a much better trade-in but with no discount.  Any thoughts appreciated?

Surprised that you aren't interested in Athol's ED30. £21k with Sat Nav

If you are interested in new only, then you need to look through Autotrader to get a feel for your trade in price (what are you trading in?). As regards the GTI, this too will depend on whether you want to go the "safe" route with a dealer, or go for a broker or supermarket which sells parallel imports with UK spec. The biggest discounts usually come from the Supermarkets, but you have to be careful as to exactly how new the cars are. Some on this forum have bought "new cars" which have turned out to be 18month old cars that have been stood on docksides and have awful corrosion already showing through in the engine bay. Brokers are the middle ground and you will get a better discount from these, but you will generally have to wait longer for delivery for cars that you spec yourself. Some brokers do take part exchanges, but don't expect the same offer that you may get from a dealer. Most tend to sell privately if dealing with brokers and go for the bigger discount. :nerd:

Western in Gorgie, Edinburgh have 2 Ed30 at the moment, when i picked mine up he showed me the VW stock on the computer, there's a tornado red fully loaded too sitting somewhere too.
they also had several mk5 gti's and about 4 mk5 polo gti's too, had never seen one then seen 4 in one go incl a white one for all you white lovers.
