Hey people, just a quick query. im considering buying a 1997 golf GTI 3 door. what sort of MPG should i realistically get from it.
Thanks
-
hi, is it an 8v or 16v?
I'll give quoted figures and what I think are realistic for both:
8v 38mpg, achievable on motorway, realistically 34-36mpg? maybe less in town.
16v 32mpg, achievable on motorway, in town I get 28mpg. On average calc on mileage and full tank works out about between 28 and 30mpg.

I have just being to the mk2 section and they are quoting 38-45mpg....  I did the vw summer night's big fat tour of the north and averaged 37.4mpg for the day, which is about right going on previous thread's

Had to drive to worcester and back this weekend for a wedding.
Got 36mpg both ways in 8V Mk3.

how heavy is your right foot!
My old MK3 8V used to get in the region of 32mpg, on an average city run, round about the 36-38mpg on the motorway/A roads. I had pipercross induction and S/S cat back exhaust, so nothing in terms of engine mods if that helps. if i was really having a "spirited" run then around the 28-30mpg mark, unless out on A Roads.

You guys arnt trying hard enough  i had my Vr6 down to 19 over the weekend

I've finally got the power steering and sunroof back on my MK2 and even after keeping the little bugger above the 3500rpm it was still returning 40-43mpg on a seriously tasty run...we were out for a couple of hours on some nice back roads.
Saw a tasty restoration 911 carrera whilst out and that wasn;t messing either!!

you guys are lucky
i am getting less on the mk3 than i get on the R32
last week, about 300 miles and the most i got was 22mpg
wondering if i need to replace the maf, and sensors
also, the temp display on the dash is always at 0, when i start the car, it tries to move but just sits at 0
