i think it's the temp light but the temp guage says it is between a quarter and half only at half if in traffic but quarter when in normal conditions.
plus got 105000 on clock but uses alot of oil moved from max to min on the dipstick in 7 days. i know it leaks oil slightly but is this not taking the piss?
-
the temp light flashes when the water level is low, so try topping up the expansion bottle
if it still flashes then its a dodgy sensor and needs replaced.
-
Check the water level in your expansion tank (when cold).
This happened to my MK2 16v, when i started from cold the red flashing light came on and the engine was not even warm.
It turned out that i was loosing water from the cooling system.
:)
-
it does loose some water but i check it every day had to put a litre in on sat and the same on wed. where is it likely to leak and what is the best way to check where a leak may be?
-
With the engine running check all of the hose joints for water.
Also check the expansion tank cap, the seals do go after a while
:)
-
if your car is loosing that much water then i'd get it checked out asap!
check for leaks first off, then get a compression test done for head gasket failure
-
no head gasket done about 15k ago and no mayonnaise on the oil cap. il have a look the morn for leaking hoses or seals!
-
Ah, mine does that too. Sometimes.
Although its got water and no leaks, so I reckon its a dodgy sensor.... :(
-
yes just checked the water again and stopped going down now was just probably settling in the system after being run in again
-
If your red light flashes 4 times then its the same as mine and its annoying
-
mine's stopped doing that... for now. ???

if your cars using alot of oil please try valvoline maxlife this stuff conditions seals and slows down engine aging this stuff conferms to
api sl / cf
acea A3 / B2
and is also apporved by tuv....
Valvoline's MaxLife motor oil is a blend of premium base oils with a seal conditioning agent, extra cleaning agents, additional anti-wear additives and friction modifiers. MaxLife is formulated to help condition engine seals, prevent leaks, minimize oil consumption, reduce friction, provide easier cold starts, maximize power output, resist thermal breakdown and reduce deposit formation.
check out this valvoline video......

i'm using maxlife and my clocks on 197477! still going strong. mine does use oil about 250ml every 90 mile but i do thrash it everywhere so it will burn oil...

After doing various bits and bobs on the car yesterday I had this light flashing constantly, went back under bonnet and checked fiddled with the wires on the rad and the one on the top of the tank, and problem went away (although I'm gonna find out which wires loose one day)
-
must be a vw thing. mine does it as well. Thinking of replacing my water and washer resies with polished alli ones anyway so I'll replace the switch then. As long as the car has water and the temp gauge is reading good don't worry much about it. :)
-
Bloomin annoying thou! My rev gage gives it some aswell.
Thou the mk1 temp lite does my nut in so jus think - it cud be worse! :D
-
I had the flashing light problem on my Mk2,
Make sure your're not loosing water
then put a post-it note over the flashing area.
You will never have to look at it again
(helps if you like the colour yellow) ;D
